The wood that I've stacked on the slope is Western Yellow Cedar. It can sit in the open uncovered for years and not rot. It's my emergency wood!

Hemlock dead standing is not much good for firewood it is punky.
The house is 1,600 SQ FT built in the early 50's minimal insulation , plus Granny at 98 likes the house at 75/80 F ! Benefit I get to go wood...
