I don’t want to start a debate on different stoves but I just want to ask. I don’t want to have problems with the chimney I put up. If I had 20 percent moisture wood burning in a cat stove vs a non cat I shouldn’t have anymore build up in the chimney? I have read to much on this purchase and it seems like I have threads where people’s chimney cap gets plugged with a cat stove. Does that happen if you don’t replace the cat soon enough? Are there other problems that create this problem? Seems like non cats burn hotter so the pipe stays cleaner but you use more wood. I really like the idea of slower burns but don’t want this problem. Plus is buying a cat worth the wood savings over the life of the cat. Seems like they are almost 200 dollars. Thanks for the help.
sam s cats don't just die they are kind of like shocks on a car just get weaker and work less over time. If cat gets clogged your burning junk wood.. My IS has never clogged... My wood consumption went from 12 cord a year in a NC - 13 type that would need a match and kindling after 4 hours to more heat and no matches needed before 24. I use more wood because of October and April when I just keep stove going on low n slow.. I burn 5 cord Now.. So 20 full cord less and more heat and sleep.. For 200 dollars every 3 years.. Sign me up.. My uncle house raised ranch 100 miles south of me and half my size burns 6 cord in a Fisher mama bear. This is for comparison as no idea your location.. I am near 45th parallel.
