I haven't read this whole thread so I don't know if this has been said yet or not but from my experience, poplar rots faster than many other types and if you let it sit much more than 8-12 months, you better have a place to get rid of a lot of bark because most of it will easily fall off.

So today i cut up a big oak tree that has been standing dead at my place for over 6 years and thought it would completely rotten but its still rock hard and so far everywhere i have tested is around 18% moisture

Did you split a piece and test "in the split"? It's most likely much higher.

I haven't yet but what is the difference between a split piece and a freshly cut piece?

If your testing on the end it'll be a bit dryer. The split will hold more moisture. If you test "right after" you cut then your reading is spot on!

Well yes, they are...and we can grow some nice ones also but at the same time, Milo Hansen owns the world record typical from there and I’ve always been attracted that in the bush there, you may hunt all week or so and see relatively few deer...but the one you do could be truly exceptional...just on the bucket list, thats all...again welcome and you’ve found a great place to hang out, I promise

Not sure if your popple is like what my area of Alaska is. We have a stringy later just under the bark. If that layer remains wet it rot quickly. I have cut popple that was killed in the ‘97 burn that has no bark, is off the ground and is solid as if it were still alive. And seen logs that were 1-2 years old with bark on rot.

The Sierra Nevada mountains in California do get mighty cold....that’s where the the Donner Party story took place.
