metalcuttr, you have some real nice work. Feel free to add projects. This thread has evolved to metalworking in general.

As far as forming the pig, I used a wood cutout with rounded edges. I just used different weight hammers on a soft pine board to hammer out the different depths of the pig. I used from a 2 ounce up to a two pound hammer.

I've looked at sand and shot bags and will eventually get one if I get more work for copper. I'm limited on space, and a copper work is a small percentage of what I do.

I have a friend with a large oak dishing stump with about five different sized divots. He uses it for bronze sculpture. It is really nice to use. So many surfaces to work and they are almost smooth as glass inside. I believe he has bands around it too. I made a small one, but it moved too much.

Thanks for the info. It appears you use the soft board much the same as I use the log round. Interesting about the oak stump. I can see how a much harder wood with preformed hollows and shapes could be used to form softer/thinner metals. The metal would deform before the hard wood!

Local sheet metal supplier sells to the public. I ask for the cut off pieces from larger sheets. Not too expensive. We are fortunate to have them.

It is funny how local prices for metal of all types seem to be more reasonable back east. Here in WA St. the local prices are much higher unless buying in large quantities. One would think with the availability of cheap Chinese and Korean steel, the prices would be more reasonable. Around here even the rems are the same price per pound as the full sheets. Of course, recently, the whole overseas tariff thing has really scrambled metal prices!

For a while I’ve been wanting to make a campfire tripod to hold a kettle or a pot with a handle. This was the project I had in mind a few months back when I wanted to get into smithing. Just finished it, hope to put it to use later.....
    Excuse the garage disaster :picard:

All in all it turned out well! :cool:If I were to make another I would use square stock for the legs and I think square stock for the hook slide and just hammer in flats where I want to punch the holes. I think it would look much nicer. By the way I made another leaf from 3/8” round stock:loco: :picard: DD610BA7-2C17-4D47-B2EE-4D1EEFC19525.jpeg

This is just a small project for jrcurto . It's an extended damper handle made from 1/4" steel rod. The maple leaf was cut and filed from steel sheet. The handle he had was short, and this one should keep it further away from the stove top.

Really like your tri-pod and trammel! Would be great for out door fire pit or camping. Next spare moment I might try my hand at one. Thanks for the idea!
