so i picked up this turd last year for 200$ from a guy I used to work with. Needed a motor and a pump. So I bought a harbor freight 6.5hp and a 11gpm pump and got to splitting wood. Fast forward to two weeks ago my wife and I were splitting wood and sheard the bolts off the slide on s big chunk of Osage. So that prompted me doing some modifications to it that I’ve wanted to do for a long time. Me being 6’5” I wanted a taller splitter. So I chopped it up and made the top of the beam 36”. I can’t wait to split with this thing being taller. Bending over all the time really killed my back. Still have a lot to do yet. I’ll be measuring for a cylinder tomorrow for a log lift. Picking up huge logs sucks
Got a little further. It was a hot one today in the low 90s. Slow moving but I busted out the tube bender and bent a few tubes for the lift arm. Made the shelf for the motor and the hydraulic tank. Tubing is 1.75 O.D. .120 Wall so it should be plenty strong. Haven’t decided how to fill in the center part of the arm yet
Well done sir !!! When I bought my trailer, it was always my intention to mount the engine/pump/reservoir on the front, and have the business part of the splitter half way down....and that's exactly what I did. I found a 15 ton Speeco forsale cheap, took it apart, and mounted the various bits exactly where I wanted them. Then I drove it over to my favorite hydraulics shop, and we plumbed it right there in the parking lot. There's no such thing as once size fits all. If you don't built a piece of equipment to suit what YOU'RE doing with it, it will always (to a certain extent) be a compromise. Keep up the good work.
I never did get it running right. Could only get it to run on one cylinder. Both had compresson but I can only get spark to one cylinder. Parts are hard to find and expensive so I just pulled it off
Was out of town last weekend and I’ll be out of town this weekend also. So things have been slow. I might add a bar or two to the lift arm
Here is the table. It folds up for transport Pay no attention to all the junk in my tiny barn. I haven’t had time to get it all put together since we moved in last year
When I saw the first picture I thought it was a Steam Punk sculpture. But as I read down, I see you are really turning it into something professional! Nice work!
no major updates but i did get a lot of welding done yesterday. i have a little more to do today and then i should be starting on hydraulic lines!
Might I suggest putting some sheet metal 1/8" or so on the sorting table, it'll help keep wood from getting in between the bars and your ram from pushing said wood, bending your nice work. Also throw an extra cross bar or 2 on your log lift. When you get your lift on and your valve body, you may need a reduced in the line to avoid launching the wood over your head. Even with a reducer mine is still pretty jumpy. Otherwise, looks great! Your going to love the log lift they are a great addition to any log splitter .
Very nice work, fordguy64 ! I had the same thought about a sheet of metal to keep the splits from nosing down into the bars and bending them. Let us know how it works.
Ran out of gas for The welder. But I painted it and just had to try it out. So I took out out and split some big ole logs.. man the lift is SO NICE! So far it seems that I built the table low enough that it won’t get hit by wood when I split it. But if it starts to become an issue I’ll put some sheet metal on it Still gotta finish the jack and hitch. Also I’ll add a bar on operator side. I had a log come rolling at me .also some kind of a bar or something to the sides of the table. Had a few chunks slide of the side of the table. Maybe I’ll even find some new tires for it
That looks great! Job well done for sure. I wouldn’t believe they are the same splitter. The only think I would add is a cup holder
