I got to looking around today and saw a bunch of stuff was flowering: From the garden I created last year in front of my house, beside the driveway: Butterfly weed Some sort of daisy (not Shasta, but similar) A penstemon Purple coneflower Speedwell Unfortunately the day lilies had already closed for the evening - the cloud cover has made it very dark outside. I have several named varieties in that section getting ready to bloom.
The side garden also had some good stuff: Clematis Ninebark leaves Spirea A random foxglove was growing in what used to be the holding garden from when I bought a bunch of shrubs. Only foxgloves I planted are in the shade garden - 100' away.
In the front of the house the wild, orange day lilies are getting ready to bloom but other stuff is looking good Hosta leaves (too bad the roses behind it didn't survive the winter - I have terrible luck with those. Husker Red Penstemon Rose Campion
And finally from the shade garden: These are the foxgloves I actually planted Heuchera Blue and green hosta The leftovers from a peony that didn't make it thru yesterday'sdownpours I never remember what these yellow flowers are. I gave up the battle and let them take over under the crabapple (trunk in top, center of pic) The foliage in the top right is a hydrangea tree
Lovely flowers, all carefree and hardy for NH, foxgloves, coneflower, and rose campion are self seeders. I love the peastone mulch.
bogieb Those yellow flowers you can never remember, Are they St. Johns Wort? Beautiful flowers and I' m impressed that you are on a first name basis with them. metalcuttr
I really like the butterfly weed. I don't think I ever have seen that. We have here a large bush called a butterfly bush but it is purple and much taller.
Yeah, got termites in the area and don't want to invite them closer to the house. And the shade garden is in a damp/wet spot so bark mulch didn't make sense (unless I want to grow fungi - which I don't)
Butterfly weed is a native wildflower. You don't see them often at garden stores but I got lucky last year and the local Agway got a couple in so I grabbed one (the only one left). It is a type of milkweed and they host Monarchs. All kinds of nectar/pollen loving wildlife love them. Very hardy too.
It isn't St. Johns Wort it's a type of buttercup. I would be inclined to call it a tall buttercup, but the leaves aren't the same.
Thanks it's a setting in the camera that lets you choose what color you want to high light and the rest is B&W . Here's a poppy
Beautiful flowers you have grown, for sure. I can't even get a clematis to flower. I can grow dandelions pretty well though.....
Blue is my favorite color - it really pops in that picture. And, this weekend I picked up a couple of small painted ferns from a nursery. Not sure where they will end up (besides shade) since that is not what I was looking for (not sure if that is a or a - )
