30.8°F here, snowing, like Canadian border VT. Pushed some uglies in the stove, keeping the place warm. Wanted to finish splitting the rounds still in the truck, but my shoulder is sore, so I'll wait.
Same with these only im glad I have a hydraulic splitter. These tested that thing to a max. Creaking and popping. All sorts. It burns great and long! That grain is Tight!
30's at night and mid 40's during the day... Tulip in the evening to get going then topping off with 2.5yr seasoned mix of walnut and cherry.
Ooh snow! we are forecast to have 31c/88F here today should be a nice day Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
No, not the kind you have there! Liquidambar styraciflua - Wikipedia Better known as the American sweet gum! Here are some pics from the 27 ton splitter
0c and mixed rain and snow right now. I have a bit of doug fir in the stove and a few windows open for fresh air. The house is sitting at 24c/75f All I can say is wow!!
Yes Sean, Anyone here on the forum who has dealt with it say's the "EXACT" same thing!!! When you get a Gum tree, you cut it up and keep what will fit in your stove or Fireplace round and give the rest to the dump unless you have a "MIGHTY" big slitter, because even the 27 ton has problems! It's just not worth the aggravation trying. It does burn well though!!!
I cant believe how stringy it is! I guess if you have lots of other options you can pass on this stuff.
Yes, but it's great burning wood! If you happen to be scrounging and come across it, I'll take as much as I can get "AS LONG" as I don't have to split it! I don't think you have any of that in your area!!! It's mainly a southern US tree.
leoht some of those who post tend to post pictures of the gum splitting they split shortly after getting it. Some others tend to wait and let it dry out quite a bunch and some wait until its frozen then its time to split it. Depends on who you talk to. But rough enough.
It can. My neighbor has one in her yard that has a 30" trunk. As per your post to leoht, "NOTHING" you do, how long you wait, dry, wet, etc does not help gum!!! Trust me, after burning for nearly 40 years, I split very little bit of gum.
Yea that's bad looking stuff right there. I thought that it probably was something different. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
