I have started using 93 octane in all equipment-burns hotter and cleaner I guess-may not matter but that and some Sta'Bil and/or Seafoam helps peace of mind-I agree that running it empty is a big plus...and the manufacturer recommends it so why not? I get tired of replacing 23. carbs in weed-eaters and saws...Hope all are well and I agree Blazing I have a good platform there to expand the cradle...Take care all

Those look as if it would be easy to hit the engine with errant splits. Is it just not a problem? Or do the log cradles catch everything? Or?

Unless your equipment requires it, using anything over 87 octane is netting you less power, and more fuel costs.

What equipment of yours says 93 is recommended?

None sir-point taken and well respected-I'll re-think and research---Guess I just assumed it would combat the sludge build-up of ethanol...Thanks for pointing that out as I value your insight...Stay well my friend :handshake:

I like mine:thumbs: I had some issues with the motor but that was resolved and it is a champ fired up and splits relatively fast.

I run ethenal free summer blend 87 octane if I remember correctly . I'll fill up 4 cans for the splitter and that's lasts me the winter.

As for hitting the motor I've not had an issue yet. Honestly it's designed very well.
I WONT EVER pull it behind a car again though EVER! I can't believe it didn't rattle to pieces coming home.. Now it gets loaded in a trailer if it goes anywhere.....

I agree 100%. I've towed mine three times and it's just brutal on the machine without suspension. Even with the tires aired down some it's bad.

Thanks! In my area (SE PA), there's barely any ethanol free gas available - then, it's just race gas, 30 minutes away and it's $6-$10/gallon from what I've seen. Just going to go with E10 and sta-bil and hope for the best. That's what I've been doing for my snowblower too.

You could hit the engine, but the engine is further forward than where splits would normally fall. Granted, if one gets hung up and retracts with the ram, it could release near the engine. I think the log cradle is almost a necessity though or you'll be doing a lot of picking up splits. The log cradle bolts to the engine side.

My only other experience was with a Gravely 27 ton (same as the Ariens) and that had wider rails that could catch falling splits a little bit...not as good as a log table/cradle though. The part where it says Splitting Capacity are rails and are wider than the DHT top and allowed halves/splits to stay off the ground.

My biggest concern before buying was that the wheels were right in the operating zone. So far, that hasn't really been a big issue - but I've only used it once.

EDIT: Looks like they have a larger flat log table available too. The large table looks like it totally covers the engine: Large Flat Log Table Kit (Excludes 22 Ton Model 106080)

Excellent! Vertically would have been easier with that big chunk too. Sorry Ashwatcher

Oh he's coming around Backwoods Savage - Read closely and you'll see I have him committed to "50 lbs or so" he will split the right way, the Bob Seger horizontal bop way...I'll have him up to 75 lbs in no time...and before you know it...he'll be tipping no more....and possibly tipping me as his personal trainer.....:binoculars::picard:

God intended to have wood split horizontally because we burn wood laying horizontally.

I will say when I'm splitting horizontal with the ariens, the wings suck. An issue I need to address this year before I start splitting.

I'm pretty sure God only intended that we split WITH the grain. Other than that, I'm not seeing the restrictions and stipulations others are so easily finding in their 'good woodsman book of good & evil'.

    Myth.
More octane makes the flame front travel slower and burn cooler...that's why it is used in high compression engines, to control "pre-ignition". No benefit in a standard engine other than some places sell it with 'fuel system cleaner" in it already. Won't hurt anything though if that's what you want to use.

Grasshopper, you will see the wisdom when able to fully see---this is older than time and we have fun with it...we also lay it down to cut it...and I will play Conway if I have to...done it before... EstoParatus , may your milk crates remain full...

Didn't know that Conway Twitty was wood-cuttin' tunes... Cuttin' < > Splittin' mind you. Of course you lay it down to CUT it. If you turn on the Conway Twitty, well, what happens next might be a little unpredictable. Especially with beverages of a certain sort.

Something simple as a couple angles welded on works great, these at 12" they could be 18" to hold even more

I also welded the grate in place because it kept creeping down letting pieces roll off, extremely glad I extended it, when splitting by myself I can load a lot more on the splitter from the trailer.

Sweet shaggy wood dump hoarder , thats what I'm talking about-I love my splitter but I'm tired of half a 8" split not resting left or right while I handle the other half---def gonna have to fabricate or alter something...your set up is what I'm looking for-TY

Thanks for the replies answering my question. I can see where that larger table certainly work well, and I'll take you guy's word that hitting the engine just isn't a problem.
Maybe Santa can drop one of those off for me next Christmas.
