Does Home Depot sell the new and used bigger saws online only? I can't say I have ever walked into one to see anything bigger than a Husky 460.

I believe the 6421 is online only for new. Though i cant imagine who would pay that much for one when you can get a much better deal at an actual dolmar dealer.

They sell the used saws at the rental center in the store. You can go there and pick one up and check it out. If your intent on purchasing one, use the website to locate a used one for sale near you. They should let you pull the muffler to inspect the piston for scoring and wear.

If your interested in new PM millermodsaws or fordf150 about one. Good felllas, and they can do better than Homer Despot on the price of a new saw.

I did a little looking around this morning. Home Depot in our area has Makitas only for the most part. They are selling the 642120 for $322.00. Seems like a good deal for a 64cc saw. Specs say it will handle a 28" bar but comes with a 20". Is the Dolmars cousin of the 6400?

Yea. Snap that bad boy up if it looks like the one HDROCK posted. Like said you can turn it into an 80cc saw for a small investment.

6421 is the twin of the dolmar. It's exactly the same besides the color.

I posted a screen shot yesterday. If you can get it go do so quickly they sell out fast.

I'd go buy that Makita like a Boss after you pull the muffler and check the cylinder and piston. At a minimum. Pull spark plug and look in with a bright LED flashlight.

Does anyone have any pictures of what to look for when someone pulls a plug or muffler?

There are lots on here. But basically you want to see a shiny piston skirt and top edge. Also want to see Shiney cylinder walls. You don't want any vertices scratches on either. You probably will still see machine marks on both as little hours that these saws have on them. Heck some of my saws I can see machine marks on them and I gaurentee they had 1000 the wear that these saws had when I got them used. Think about it most folks probably rent these and maybe use a tank of fuel?

I would post a pic of a bad or good cylinder but I would be looking through my phone for 10 minutes looking for a pic. Some of these guys probably have a more recent or redially availible pic to post.

I did look through my phone and I couldn't find a single one. In over 3000 pics. Of course I didn't look that close so I am sure there is one squeezed in somewhere.

Ok a quick qoogle search and I found some scoring or transfer pics. You don't really want to see this stuff. Not bad if just transfer on a high hour saw but I don't think you should see anything close to this wear. If you do walk away. Of course it gets way worse than this but there is no way the saw would be sold or running if it looked like you took a rasp to the piston.

I could show you new pics but they will look just like that new Shiney metal with possible light machine marks visible depending on your eyes. But again what you don't want is that vertical transfer/scoring visible on the piston. It usually shows up on a piston before the cylinder walls. But when you take the muffler off rotate the saw till the piston becomes visible and then slowly drop it below the exhaust port and look at the cylinder walls. The exhaust side will scratch or wear first as it sees less fuel on it as well as has higher temps.

    Here's a pic of a bad piston on a 036 I rebuilt years ago.

A good one will look oily and shiny and may have horizontal machine marks still on it. They should also let you fire the saw up and here it run. Thats the real proof. Idle shouldn't change if you tilt saw in different positions.

That pic bar just posted is extreme. They can still be scored and run.

He makes a good point. Start saw. And turn it on its side. You can be holding it to do this. Just let it be ideling. Then turn it upside down for a few seconds search side as mentioned it should not change tune of idle or stall.

When I bought mine from HD Rental, they started it for me, first thing. They thought that would be enough proof for me, but I asked them to pull the muffler. They did, begrudgingly, but it allowed me to get a good peak at the piston. Pull the pull cord slowly and you can get a decent feel for compression, though not perfect. My Makita is my new pride and joy. The upgrade to the top end is on the "to do" list, but by all accounts it is worth the money.

    Another satisfied customer :)

This program allows HD to keep new equipment and not loose money. After their giant discount they get for volume and since they negotiate their huge contract I'm sure they get a great price on them. They rent them 6 to 13 times at say $50 each time then sell the saw for $325 they do alright. And you the buyer gets a great discount on a saw that's not even been used as much as a normal firewood guy will put on it.

The saws get bought and rented for 2 years. Then they go up for sale the first Monday of the month.

I wouldn't bother pulling the muffler on a HD saw. At $320 bucks, give or take, if it runs properly, good 'nuff. Take it home and pull the muff. Then you have two choices if you don't like what you see. Buy a $200 top-end and enjoy 80cc power for half price. Or take it back to HD. We ain't buyin a saw from Joe Shady behind the Burger King dumpster here. It's f'n Home Depot for crissake. Throw the jeezless thing back across the counter if it's FUBAR and pick another one.

Brian I agree with all you've said, and I doubt very much the saw would be FUBAR'd.

However, I'd want to confirm the ability to return the saw. I know it doesn't specifically mean no returns, but the HD website does say used rental tools are sold "as is".

Personally I'd buy with the intention of spending the 200 on the oem 7910 jug and slug and make the swap! Same saw, same weight, way more power! Then you always have the 6421p&c as back up in case anything crazy ever happened to the new top end. You also have a saw that will happily run any b&c between 20-32 inches.:saw:
