Snowy bike ride, 30°

Studs worked well, no slip & slide & went up & down hills OK.
Rode 14 miles. Some spots had a few inches of snow, pretty hard hard pedaling thru it.
Good workout, feels like I did 30 miles
Slow riding, rear derailleur iced up. Disc brakes were no problem
It'll be better after they plow the paved paths.

 

I remember when I was about 13-14 and still had my paper route.
Delivering a saddle bag full of Sunday papers in several inches of snow and slush riding my bike was not fun.
That looks like it might be fun.

Low tire pressure so the studs make good contact
This was my first ride in snow
A lot slower, different kind of workout.
14 miles was more like 30 miles, feels like you are pedaling up hill all the time. (Snow & low tire pressure)
Not much downhill coasting either .
Probably be better after the snow sets up. Sometimes they plow the paths, that would help

Was dressed just right in the beginning, then overdressed - removed layers, the it cooled down - layers back on.
Need to try to avoid slush, it ices up the derailleurs.
Don't turn when you hit a 3" snow drift, it's like like sand.
2 hour - 14 mile ride , avg was way slower than what I'm used to

toying with the right pressure
38 psi good in shop at 65°, get softer in the 25° snow
Had 38 psi, not sure what they were when I got home.

Hands got cold, ended up with heavy ski gloves
Hands in one position not moving much,
Now looking at pogies

Can ride bare handed or when real cold wear gloves
Work on snow machines too

 

Those are real nice man wish I had some of those when, Riding on the motorcycle on the freeway one time 45 degrees and raining slightly, I had to pray my fingers off the throttle, I had gloves on but they were not cold weather gloves

 

Might be nice for the ATV as well

 

What kind of shift levers do you have will those work OK with shifting?

 

Good for you. That looks like a real good work out...

 

Local bike store had a high dollar set on one of their fat bikes
They slide over the brake & shift levers then zip/tie/velcro down snug to the handle bar.
Hands slip inside protected for the wind with plenty of room to operate the brake shift levers.

Like anything, they make hard core well insulated ones (-20°) high dollar ones down to neoprene ones for $30.

Local bike forum guy just gave me a good idea
1st pogies were winter coat hoods
Says the Carhart snap on hoods fit well over the handle bars, I have a couple from my working days.
May give them a try.

looked like pretty wet snow.
8" & 25° definitely qualifies as cold weather .

We got about 4 more inches.
Forecast is for 12° tonight, maybe another inch or 2 of snow.

Looks lie your back up to 50° on Thanksgiving.
