papadave, is right but if I remember right you are going through the wall. most of those kits you can do from the ground. another reason to go higher. my rods screw together push brush up when close to top rotate pull back down less than 10 minutes only go up on roof once a year to check flashing clean cap..

So I get the metal round brushes? I don't want to damage the chimney by using the wrong type of brush. The chimney will be of the ground in the back so I think I can push the brush up from the bottom clean-out port without climbing up on the roof.

If you come thru the wall and run to a Tee to go vertical, you can uncap the bottom side and run your brush up that. My dad uses this technique.

Edit: Guess I should have started reading posts from the top of the page... You've got it figured out, Kimberly :D

Don't forget you still need to clean whatever horizontal run you have.

Do I have to dismantle the pipe? If so, how often?

Elbows will probably require you to dismantle. From the stove to the wall should not be that big of a deal to dismantle. Being a first year wood burner... At least once a month for a while. Till your wood and operating skills are up to par. Then I'd say bare minimal of twice a year for peace of mind.

If your Tee isn't horribly tall, you can use a mirror and flashlight to look back towards the stove along the horizontal, from outside...
I check my chimney this way from the clean out door in our basement- saves a lot of time!

sorry I was late to the party, there is no "required" minimum rise before horizontal on our units though I usually encourage at least a couple ft if there's room to help get the exhaust column moving earlier on cold starts, helps reduce smoke spillage on cold starts.

Thanks for taking the time to come in with this information, I was not even thinking about the smoke part.
