The chimney is fine. It burns with the door open. Are you getting any secondary burn?

I have to respectfully disagree that this isn't always the case. I had to diagnose one about a month ago, same complaints. The ceramic wool was bunched up around the flue exit in the top of the stove. The complaint was the exact same and the customer had dry wood. With the door closed you get a lot less air flowing through the unit and this can cause the fire to snuff itself.

Where ever fresh air comes in creosote will condense since it's bringing cooler air in. keep your air intake clean as well as the chimney cap. Wood above 20% MC is not your friend with an EPA stove. Stick with wood around 15% .

well, prob'ly doesn't really matter much, my opinion and all, but hey, I'm 55 years old, 6'1" tall, 180 lb., and in decent shape, and I figure that qualifies me to have an opinion.

    1. inspect stove/chimney for blockage, extend the chimney 4 feet
    2. i got oak i'm burnin' that was split/stacked at least 5 years ago.....2 or 3 ain't enough for me
    3. make sure dryer and/or other exhaust appliances ain't runnin' when tryin to light stove, can cause backdrafting in single story homes
    4. extend the chimney 4 feet
    5. extend the chimney 4 feet

The first thing to check is the flue pipe and chimney. Make sure there are no restrictions. A chimney located at upwind (prevailing) side of a house can sometimes be a problem due to elevated pressure at chimney and negative pressure at downwind side of house. These effects can be significant when chimneys are not high enough. The only real solution is to use draft-boosters (inducers). Quality of wood is most likely not the cause of the problem.
