Thanks for all the feedback fellas. Here's what I can tell you...
    • Chain is sharp and rakers are set to standard gage height
    • Drive links are good - at least good enough that the chain will spin freely in the bar when advanced by hand to set chain tension.
    • The filter is very clean, but I will definitely try a cut without it when I get a little more shop time later this week.
    • A known good 441 carb won't be easy to come by for testing purposes...
    • Tank vent is functioning correctly
    • Saw passes press/vac testing
I'm hoping to get back out to look at the saw Thursday evening, so I'll report back with what I find.

    Too much oil on clutch?

Bit you swapped clutches and still had problem? Or did you just swap drums? I have to go reread.

Ah, I see. Low power causes the RPM's to drop, so the clutch doesn't hold as firmly and can slip.

Fuel or coil. Check the spark plug and replace just for the heck of it.

I had a collapsing fuel line on a 028 one time. Line was basically goo in the tank.

I just had the same problem, fuel line collapsed just outside the tank exit it would run and rev but no power under load.

I apologize fellas - I should have followed back up with this thread and never did. Nothing worse than a thread just hanging out there in the breeze!

I had thoroughly cleaned the carb on this saw and that made no difference. I didn't put a carb kit in, but did completely disassemble it and gave it a few rides through the US cleaner. This provided no improvement. I was eventually able to come up with another carb to try on the saw and it ran fine after that. So, I know the carb was the problem, but what exactly about the carb was causing the issue I unfortunately do not know...

Sometimes all the cleaning in the world won't clean up all of the contaminates in the carb unless you remove the welch plugs. Glad you got it sorted out.

ethanol fuel - so much fun to work with. leaves deposits or causes oxidation of the tiniest passages in a carb , barely detectable in some cases.

That's not a bad idea, but gets very pricey if you go through much fuel at all. I use ethanol-free gasoline in my mix and drain fuel lines when a saw is going to sit for a longer period of time. The saw I was having the carb problems with was a new acquisition...

Yea I run ethanol free fuel.

No way I am running canned fuel . Thats quite a bit of money. I can buy a carb every couple of years with the savings of running E free fuel.

My 650 uses a whole quart of fuel per tank. One day this summer I burned a gallon of fuel cutting firewood.

What does that stuff cost like $15/qt?
