General chainsaw questions, answers and helpful info for all.

I'll go first.

1st- back in 2018 we did the transfer slot mod. to our 365X-TORQ. Before we did it, I bought a DTI-20K Tachometer so we could adjust the carb. All the info I found said the max RPM was 13,300. I always set it at 13,000±. I checked it this afternoon and it was at 13,000± so I left it.

2nd- on my 346XP 50cc version, I found the max RPM was 14,100. I always set it at 13,800±. Today it was only at 12,500±. I turned the high side screw all the way clockwise until I ran out of adjustment and now, I can only get 13,300. It runs and cuts great. Not sure what to do next.

The low battery indicator on the tach came on so, I'm gonna get a new battery tomorrow and check them both again. Does what I'm doing sound right?

It might very well be time to replace the diaphragm in the carb and give it a thorough cleaning. Has that ever been done? Fuel lines and filter + air filter condition can contribute as well.

 

Other than air filters and spark plugs it hasn't needed anything yet. Next time I go to the dealer, I'll mention the diaphragm and see what he says.

I changed the battery in the tach. Ran it with and without the air filter, it ran the same both ways, 12,500±. I removed the red limiter tab on the H side and turned the screw a tiny bit clockwise, and it went to 13,800±. I went and made a few cuts in a small 4-inch log and then a really big log. It seemed fine. I checked it when I was done and it was still at 13,800±.

Unless anyone thinks I should do or try something else, I gonna leave it and check it every once in a while, as the weather gets colder, which I always do anyways.

All kidding aside if the saw runs and cuts okay, I'd leave well enough alone.

I've tried adjusting carbs from scratch per mfrs. specifications and end up practically launching the saw into the woods after 15 minutes.

Along came mtronic Stihls to my saw hoard and the end of the carb problems...or so I thought. They can be finicky in the hot weather. Wont hot start at times.

 

The first iteration of Swedish lectric carbs I bought had some issues. Had to spend additional $150 on an updated carb/'puter to get it right. I just bought my second Atuner ten years later last December which is so far GTG. I have one saw that constantly fights me on adjustment. Was gonna sell it but when it's on tune it runs so dammed good. Seems every time I get it out it needs some screw turning where my others are all fine year round unless I have them out in sub zero weather.

 

I just like to keep them running as well as they can. I don't get too carried away doing it though. I don't adjust the carb every time I run them like some guys do.

That's why I use a tach. I'm not good at doing it by sound.

I like Autotune and M-Tronic saws. We had a few minor issues with my son's CS2258 (2015 model). The dealer took care of it and it's been great ever since. We haven't had any issue with our MS400C.

 

My 400 gave me problems back in Spring when it was hot. I learned to keep it running or put in the shade as full sun seemed to make it hotter?

My 361 took over for most of the Summer cutting.

 

Our 400 had hot starting issues at first. The more we used it, the better it seemed to get. No issues lately. Hopefully the same happens for yours.
