Thanks for everyone's advice. I bought the name brand instead of the cheap knockoff thanks to members naming the original brand. As stoveliker said it's easy to unknowingly hit the Reverse button and strand the brush in the flu.

 

With the drill spider it cleans out from inside in 10 minutes according to one of the installers who was a chimney sweep previously.

- Let the stove cool.
- Push segments up the flue until tapping the cap.
- Pull the spider back into the flue pipe.
- Attach a [cordless] drill.
- Turn on a shop vac to suck up the dust.
- Spin up the drill and use a leather glove to keep the rods from hitting the stove where the bend up the flue would cause the rods to run against the metal.
- Pull down slowly.

That's supposedly all there is to it.

 

I use the sooteater and purposely flip the direction to drill forward on the way up and in reverse on the way down and I pump the head up and down as I go. In my mind I imagine that there are parts of the flue that will only get cleaned with going one way or the other.

Like brushing your teeth in just one direction isn't as good as back and forth brushing.

 

Yup, I clean on the way in, and on the way out...and some slow back n forth motion on each section of rod both ways too.
