I've seen some videos of folks baiting pigs in to a big batch of Tannerite and then firing it off. It's pretty impressive but gory. Normally I wouldn't condone killing an animal that way, but wild/feral hogs are nothing more than oversized cloven-hoofed rats to me. I don't feel bad killing either by any means possible.
Oh now that sounds interesting. But think I'd rather eat some pork...if it's good. I've heard mixed reviews on wild pig.
Probably depends on age. I am not sure I would want to eat anything off an old wild boar. My son shot a wild one down by Athens, he said it was a smelly one. He claims once you open them up they don’t smell any different than the domesticated swine he occasionally hauls. I haven’t asked if he has ate any of it yet. He learned that hog hide is tough & you need a couple sharp knives or a hone to tune things up.
I sure would give it a go on my smoker. Low and slow has to help? Butcher it up to the point you can vacuum pack it in a marinade? I’d find a way.. . Love me some pork.
I have eaten from many feral hogs that we shot in my High school days in Georgia. Some were cooked low and slow at friends places who had the facilities for hams and shoulders or a complete half. My family didn't have the right equipment so we took the meat to a local man who had brick ovens fired with live oak. He would brine, cook overnight basted with cider/vinegar and wrap all for a few dimes per pound (my age is showing)! Also sold BBQ sauce and sides like slaw and potato salad and greens. I can't remember any bad or off tasting meat. The best hog to eat is up to 70 pounds or so and female. Some times you would find a large neutered male that had escaped a farm or had been injured where it counts and they were excellent. I am told that males will deliberately try and castrate a rival in a fight. Don't even want to think about getting hooked there by a boar. We almost always skinned our hogs instead of scalding and scraping because the wilder ones were very hairy. If we got a pig whose genetics were closer to the farm, we would offer it to a local friend who had a barrel or scalding pot. We helped with the scalding and butchering and got an invite to the feed. Point is, a young hog treated right is excellent eating. If I lived where they had a hog problem I would acquire all the bulk sausage and smoking equipment and do a lot of hog harvesting!!
Saw our first crock pot pigs on camera today, the mama is brave or knew I was working...lol...never seen one here in broad daylight...mama on right, piglets on left A healthy pig is good, i don't want a big boar to eat. A young boar is ok, if you cut him as soon as he hits the ground. It's usually very lean, makes good sausage if fat is added. A young one would be good smoked. These would probably be good with all the nut grass they're eating. Fall mast makes some good meat too.
Iffin you weren’t 16 hrs away I’d be your huckleberry. In weather like you are having, it would be bloated before it hit the ground, if it was a daytime kill.
Got in contact with the guy wanting to trap them. Hopefully he will come down next Thursday night and have a couple days to trap. He's from N GA. Wants them for meat, feed friends and family in the mountains. And he wants to pay a little for the hogs.. ... We'll see how everything pans out.
