Testing out the new splitter

Everybody needs a splitter. Glad to see you finally got one. The reason it slowed down on some of it is your wedge design. It is a very wide angle. The slim wedges do much better. A thinner wedge can get into the wood easier and has more leverage compared to a big wide wedge that flares way out. I’d bet you could find a narrow wedge to fit on there.

I like that idea of the ramps. I’ll be hitting marketplace for a set of those now!

 

Been almost five years since I went hydro and said the same...why didn't I do this sooner?

Rare I go vertical unless busting down big rounds. If a hydro could be set up where I can stand and split I prefer vertical.


The one I use is 27 ton and show it no mercy. Ill hold the lever and let it work though. Of course I rarely take gnarly wood either.

Haven’t had the opportunity to split in some time, so it was fun to get out there today and run some rounds through it. Most of what I split today was from a score last June; Poplar and Birch. Plus a few other random rounds mixed in. Not bad for a little over an hour’s worth of work.





This stuff was pretty tough to split. The splitter did fine, but you could hear it working. Elm?

 

That looks like some flavor of red oak to me...

Thanks guys. Didn’t split like Red Oak. I can usually split that by hand with really little effort. This stuff took some force with the splitter.

 

When you get elm, there won't be any doubt!

I have been splitting ash that strings like that. What a pain in the butt.

 

Exactly...I've been working up some ash that I gave up trying to hand split!

 

And I thought sweet gum was bad

Sweet gum is horrible too.
I need some pics of the ash please!! I've never seen it shred apart like elm and gum.

 

Pretty much par for the course for hickory in my experience.

 

Someday, I'll walt style my Mtd splitter. With a log lift. I haven't when run one of his yet and I know I'd prefer this setup.
