Thanks Eric! I still enjoy it. I do what I can for as long as I can. No need for me to push it. My wood is for our woodstove. Not making firewood to sell, like many others.
Day 3 of wooding. Moving splits and making more. Rack full! I took it to just before the "wobble" factor was a concern. And dated Bed covers applied for a 3-yr nap. I kept splitting until I decided some noodling may be needed. The lighter colored wood is some of the sugar maple. That'll do for a while. Other things have my time occupied this week.
Looks great! How do you like that 'spring' maul? I'm in the same boat; did some 'firewooding' over the last few days but most likely won't get to do any more until next week (other than cleaning up the mess from splitting). Feels good to finally get those RO rounds processed (it only took me just under five years....).
Good eyes! That's a Chopper 1. It does have metal "wings" that swing out to facilitate the splitting. I had it out as it's heavier than the x27, and I wanted to blow through a k-notty bit. It's too heavy for me to use regularly. I see no advantage the spring wings provide. I'm sure you are pleased to get those rounds "launched".
Nice looking rack of wood there Mike. I prefer noodling over trying to split gnarlies even with a hydro. Easier to stack. I've started cutting real uglies in half for the nugget bin.
I'm sure I'm not the only one with empty racks this time of year. I spent time cleaning out debris around the racks. All ready for something to fall my way. 5 racks I'm still working on collecting inventory. There's a standing dead ash that I'll have a tree service take down. There's also a handful of red maples that have issues with dead crowns and broken tops. I should be able to deal with those.
I'm hoping to add a standing dead ash to the woodyard. I contacted the town's Tree warden. He agrees with a tree service opinion that the ash is on town property. He said sometime over the next 6 weeks a tree service will take it down. I hope to be around to tell them I want the wood. Maybe, I'll put out a sign. Our property is a triangle bordered by 2 streets. This is on the side street. Our property angles uphill. You can see stones that outline a path through the woods. To the left of the picture is a STOP sign, at the intersection with the road under construction.
There I was.... Minding my own business... Just about to have my coffee at 5:10, when I hear a crash. Nothing obvious until I went out for a morning walk. The town guys cut and moved the wood my side of the street. I have something to do this morning, moving it further up the hill to be processed.
I got most of the limb wood moved up the hill. Log tongs are 16" I moved the rounds back from the street and staged to be cut to length. That last piece is about 14" diameter.
Looks solid. I'm amazed the mailbox was untouched. They gonna take the rest of the tree down? Being surrounded by woods we occasionally hear limbs or trees falling. Of course I'll investigate after. The recent heavy winds took one over on our back hill. I climbed up to see and it was a basswood. Ill let it rot as the hill at that point is a 45* rocky slope. Hoard on and cut safe my friend.
The town's tree warden knows of the tree and scheduled it to come down. I don't know the date or tree service. That was on 5/11. Bigger rounds definitely solid. Limb wood showing sphalting. It'll all get stacked. Small, beyond prime wood still burns just fine as SS wood, or to get overnight coals going.
