I wasn't planning to cut this morning, but looking out at the trunk/log is like a siren's song. It's getting thinner, aside from branch crotches. Other end of the log Big rounds Then I cut some other branches for a quick productive feeling. If you scroll in on the closest round just above, you can see where it's calling out to be split. I cut until I got swamp butt with the sun, 80⁰ temp and dewpt in mid-60's. Time to hydrate and a shower, in that order.
Doesn't take long to get sweaty. We cut 2 nice size hickory logs right before lunch, yep time for a shower and nap
No rain today. Yay!! I was able to cut what's left of the trunk log, mostly.. Just one gnarly crotchety piece left. I was able to remove the improvised cribbing the tree service laid out for the trunk to drop on. Lots of limbs and rounds. I used the 18in Husky 350. I then used the leave blower to clean up the area. I hope to get the lawn mowed tomorrow. It'll be the 1st mowing. Lots of divots/dents in the area. It feels good to get it to this point.
I have an abundance if compost. With a pitchfork I'll pry up outside the depression, on all sides. I'll peel back any grass and fill with compost, folding any grass back on top. But, no. I've never used sand to fill in depressions.
Made some good progress there Mike. You guys got some serious rain as did us down here. Are you going to split the bigguns where they are?
Most everything will be cut/split pretty much where they are. Lots of potential splitting rounds. It'll be a fairly short move to the racks. My rain gauge showed 2+ inches this morning. Expecting similar on Friday. The rain did rinse off any bark residue crap. My stamina is still on the low side. 2-3 hours of wooding and I'm done.
I once watched a YouTube video of a very fussy guy who leveled his yard using dry sand and a 10 foot drag on his lawnmower. Wanted his lawn as flat as glass. Struck me as odd but in reality it’s probably a smart way to accomplish that task. Might be a northern thing that our brains just jump to topsoil when we think about lawn repair. As long as it’s not too thick and wide a little sand won’t hurt a thing. No one should seriously take lawn advice from me tho. Even the weeds have a hard time handling my abuse. LOL
Not a northern thang...lol...I always just used dirt too, until I found out grass will grow through the sand a lot faster. Best way is to put some, let grass grow, then add another layer, until level.
The six McMansion built next door all got what I call golf course greens. A layer of rich loam topped with an inch or two of sand. Supposedly a perfect environment for lawn with automatic watering.
