I got this close once. Never saw the fawn though and momma was grunting rather fiercely , so I left. Walking away from pizzed off mamas isn't such a bad thing to learn or possess the instinct.
We’ve had a very windy two days here. I walked my woods this morning knowing full well what I would find. Seems like I have to put a saw back together. A nice red oak fell over one of my ATV/hiking trails. Had a leafed out top. Not too big I think I will use the Husky with the 16” bar. It will do the job. The stump was rotten. I should get 35-40 rounds out of her before the top. The work is never done when you own a woods. I do not look forward to running a saw in warm temps but oh well!
We had a high temp of 69 here today so I went after the red oak that fell over my ATV trail. Got 39 rounds out of her! Got the trailer full and 14 rounds to pick up tomorrow. It was pleasant working in da woods. I will split it with the hydro in the shed.
We’ve been spending a lot of time up at our cabin so not much work has been done in da woods. Our grandson was in our sole possession for three days. He gives me great joy. I needed to mow the cemetery across from our house today so I lit off my never ending continuous brush pile. Lot of sickly looking trees over there so I am constantly picking up stuff so I don’t destroy my zero turn. It’s close to mow you can just see the roof of our home left center.
Just picked up a brand new Stihl 18” bar on FBM for $20! Ten miles from my house. The guy ordered the wrong size. The 261 is getting new steel! (I just had to tell someone)
So yesterday my neighbor with the abandoned junk yard calls me. “You want a dead red oak on the ground laying across my wife’s trail”? I said yes but not when it’s 91F with 81% humidity. He said “no hurry pal” Well, you know me! It was only 70F early this morn so I attacked it. Got 20 or so nice rounds before the punk started. Backed it into the shed turned a fan on and split with the hydro. My monster woods pile just keeps getting bigger. It is now over 13 cords. Then I attacked a rather large hickory that split and came down in the cemetery I take care of. Guess who got the rounds? My never ending brush pile in the cemetery got fed. I think I need a beer or 3 to re hydrate
The 261 got a new bar now the Honda is wearing new rears! Spooned em on myself and for once my knuckles are not bloody! The fronts still have a some life left on them.
Found another red oak down across a trail in my forty yesterday. Fully leafed out top. Not sure what put him down but it started life as a sucker about 60 years ago. The first cut off the stump had a punky center. Didn’t split them it was to hot. Got 33 nice rounds stacked on plastic. It was very colorful in my woods yesterday. Found a whole bunch of these.
Not too bad thanks Brad, it's been pretty dry so far, frosty mornings and clear cool days - perfect weather for cutting!
That’s some beautiful stuff there. This summer has offered us some cool spells as well, which sure makes doing anything with firewood more tolerable. They seem brief, but are much appreciated.
We just got another 3 inches of rain first pic is my hayfield the neighbor got it harvested just in time it can stop raining any time now
We had 65 mph winds Monday along with the above mentioned 3 inches of rain. I ran the ATV up to my woods this afternoon and oh boy. I got 16 trees on the ground over my trails. I am not heart broken. Everything living dies. It is the only sure thing in life. Most of em are oak with rot starting around the stump. I am going to have a busy fall season opening up my trails. Did not have my phone with today so no pics of the carnage,,,,,,
I should be working on the trails in my woods but the wind was from the south this morning. A good direction to light off my cemetery pile. All went well.
Fellow hoarders do you remember this pic of a nice saw log oak that a woodpecker started on early this spring? I said I would give em a year to have their fill then I will turn it into firewood? Well, our July 16 wind event took it down halfway. It will be firewood this fall once gravity does its thing. I walked my woods today and here it is: Rotten at the stump but it still has a leafed out top!
Amazing how deep those pileateds can peck a hole. Found many a log with their work in them! Hopefully its down by then.
