Good point if you're planning on cutting in USFS property.

How often do you run in to the situation where leaving the screen in becomes the limiting factor to the power that the saw could make otherwise? (stock or modded)
In other words, does needing to leave the screen in mean that porting gains are very limited?

If you add another port why not just add a second screen?
I wonder what the penalty is for cutting on usfs property without a screen.

It’s not so much a matter of gaining across-the-board the more you open it up. After a certain point, what you gain in top RPMs you lose on the bottom end. I try and add a 1”ish square hole underneath a deflector where I can on 70 cc saw and I’ll open the original hole.
I’m not out for the absolute maximum performance at the cost of noise and torque. Like I said, once it’s opened up respectably, you start to get into more noise without much of a difference in power. And again, once it’s opened up, you start getting into a trade off if you go more

It’s a pretty good fine if you get caught. I’m sure the monetary value is different and I don’t know the number. I always ask the customer if he wants a screen. If he says yes, I give him the option of a legal screen or a wider weave stainless mesh that flows better

Does the screen have to be on the muffler port itself ? Wondering if a much larger legal mesh size screen could be installed inside the can instead.

When I used to ride dirt bikes I bought a usfs approved pro circuit can for my cr to ride state forest trails. Lower db and a screen. I’m pretty sure I was the only one on the mountain with a screen and It fouled several plugs. Never used it again. :emb:

    No

And yes, that’s fine, as long as it’s secured

If you notice that the pic of the muffler on the MS460 I showed has two ports and both have screens in them. But twice the opening means twice the screen area too.

You do not have to keep the screens in unless you are cutting on National Forest which I do a lot.

I would never cut on National Forest without a legal spark arrestor. For one the fines and then you would probably lose your wood cutting privilege.

The screens, in all reality DO help some. I've been cutting after sundown many times and it's not totally uncommon to see an occasional ember fly out of the exhaust outlet. It can really become an issue cutting in dry spells where your in the woods and don't notice that ember fly out, only to hear later that night that there's a forest fire, right where you were cutting earlier that day.

I've never had that issue happen to me personally, but I know for a fact it happens (and can happen anywhere)....
