Fortunate in the area to have Mohegan Park in Norwich, established in 1906, to spot some cool old trees. I stumbled upon an area with multiple old black birch trees. My understanding is the more roughed up looking the bark the older the tree. I’m guessing I was the older of them was upwards of 200 yrs old.
Very cool Steve. I love stopping to admire an old growth tree like that. I have a BB in my woods with a 24"+ DBH.
That’s a big one. I have a one in the wood in back of me about that size maybe a little bigger. A relatively younger tree as well.
Very nice patch of woods there. Judging by that old stone wall, I’ll bet those birches were among the first cohort of trees to colonize that area when agriculture was abandoned, and reverted back to forest.
I have a couple bigguns in the back yard. Every spring I wonder if they are gonna leaf out and they do. They will make great fire wood when they do bite the dust.
This post reminds me of the old cartoons where one of the characters is really hungry and when they look at one of the other characters all they see is a piping hot roast on a platter! (Like Wyle E Coyote and the Roadrunner)
Let me tell ya. It was a real bitch to get the tape around the big one. I’m glad I live in a place where only the maker can shake his head!
