Finally got around to milling some logs the last few days and started a project. This is the first lumber I've ever made out of logs I've found. They're only 55 inches long but thats the biggest I could cut the log and still load it into the truck. It was about a 12 to 13 inch wide tree. The bottom boards are 4.5 inches and the top one is 4 inches.
Im not sure these boards won't crack or bend because they're pretty wet. This was kind of a rough draft, first attempt and more for fun. Ill probably make some 8 foot ones in the future..

Any guessers on what kinda wood it is?

Nope. The vertical posts are a different species than the horizontal boards.

Looks like a soft wood. Spruce or white pine?

Yea the verticals aren't that distinct looking in the picture. They're red oak.

Hard to tell from the picture what the wood type is...at least for this guy. I will add though, if you plan on piling wood that high, I would build something to protect that back glass.

Yep red oak on the uprights. The boards are actually mulberry.
Yea, that is the plan. Just need to find a 65 inch log.

I will have to take another picture once it gets some sunshine. The mulberry will turn a nice dark reddish brown after a few days in the sun.

Any type of preserver used that would prevent the color change? That'll be cool to see them redish in a few weeks.

No. They might stay yellow if I let them dry inside, and then put them on. They were from a mulberry tree that had been dead for a couple years but hung up so it wasn't on the ground. The boards were still surprisingly wet. We'll see how they dry

First load with the new sidewalls. They also make nice log chain racks.

I just saw this thread, nice job on the racks. My guess before reading thru was Oak & Mulberry. The color of the Mulberry didn’t jump out but I could see some yellow hue to it. That Mulberry will warp some but will weather up nice.

Nicely done. Even nicer the fact you found the log, brought it home and cut it yourself. The rails look like black locust or hedge (osage orange)
EDIT: late to the party...didnt realize you had answered.
