After sharpening the righ side cutters and getting about half way through the left side the vice of my Super Jolly won't open. I see no leaks and have never found any unexplained oil on my bench. It did feel like it was catching on the way down a couple of times but it seemed to work its self out as continued on for several more teeth before it quit opening. Any ideas folks?

I would check your lines & make sure one isn’t kinked.

Can you open your vise with your fingers ?

Maybe check & make sure your rails aren’t all gummed up ?

It probably wouldn’t be a bad idea to check your oil but if it was low it most likely wouldn’t clamp.

Can you turn your front adjustment knob to see if that breaks it free ?

Never had that happen. Might be gunked up like Jim said

Just an after thought on this: has that 3/32” pin come out of your cylinder/clevis ?

I was out sharpening some chain tonight and I thought of this also. Wasn’t it you that wrapped some tape around it to hold it in? I ended up doing the same thing

I used a small hose clamp but tape will work. One of those fuel line clamps that are made from spring steel & about 1/4” wide would probably be ideal.

Nope, I haven't looked at it yet. Probably later today.

So I pulled it apart and did everything I know to do and it seems not to be a problem with the piston that closes the vice but in the big cylinder, don't know what it's called, attached to the grinder body. Flea Bay to the rescue! New hydraulic system arrives tomorrow, a bit less than I could get it any place else.

Dissect the old one and see if you can find out what was wrong.

UPS brought a new hydraulic unit and I'm up and sharpening again.

Not much to to tear into. The vice plunger is basicly 3 pieces: plunger, body and cap. The seals were good on the plunger. No kinks or leaks in the line. That just leaves the pump that attaches to the grinder head and the base, and it's sealed unit so short of cutting it in half there isn't much to inspect.
