I spent my college days around Providence - East side , Brown, RISD, Federal Hill and RIC. More recently took the train to New York and Virginia from Providence station and ( besides the Providence Station being new) lots of Providence I didn't recognize. Surely not the stinky, fouled, old polluted river. The Cliff WAlk in Newport was something many did early in the morning right after the bars closed, and they alll closed by 1AM back then.
Thanks for sharing your adventures. That fantasy house was something else. Imagine living full time in a place like that. Only if you had servants to clean it. So nice that you got away for a couple of days with just your wife. I don't know if I would do it but it would have been a quite a paddle down the center of town at night. Walking beside it must have been quite neat.
That's just one vacation home, which makes it crazier. I would have enjoyed the paddle, but going under the bridges in the dark would have been weird. The stretch above Rt 95 would be very different in the dark as well.
Went all the way to east Rochester to buy a wood stove, turned out it wasn’t as good as represented, this was our old neighborhood, so we swung by the old house, talked to an old neighbor and visited skydive New England. took the family for a ride on the northern strand rail trail Stopped for ice cream on the way home
I created the sawfish foam kayak design for my parents originally, my dad can no longer paddle, but my mom loves to go, as long as I lift and load everything for her we paddled Arlington mill reservoir, there’s a nest island that the residents have made into a park. My son used the rope swing again like he did here a few years ago. The rope is short though, so it took the two of us to get it ready for the next swing. Had my son paddle my moms kayak back since she’s slowed down a bit. The back steps were worn down and falling apart, taught my son about carpentry as we replaced the steps with composite wood
The air show at pease was free but getting a parking pass was a challenge, we parked nearby and rode our bikes in through one of the bike lanes onto the base. It was a great air show! And we were on our way home before some people made it out of the parking lot afterwards
Cape cod region coast guard apparently got a new commander, he swung by work for a visit. Boston medflight works with the coast guard and many in the company were coast guard before. Mrs row has her birthday the day before mine, she loved her flowers, and made me her special carrot cake recipe with crushed pineapple in it, yum! went out for dinner to celebrate and had a great sunset walk Family picnic day at work, they had some food trucks and games, some lucky people won a ride in a helicopter
Shining sea rail trail, from Falmouth to woods hole, the only rail trail I know of that has ocean front views in the region. A fun ride on my in-line skates
Had water leaking through the kitchen ceiling. Tore up the bathroom floor to find the problem. Discovered rotten wood from leaks, the toilet flange rusted away, toilet shut off valve wouldn’t, and no water shutoff for just the bathroom. A number of trips to the despot later and it’s almost all back together. This was last week’s project [
Took a family trip around the Mystic river, there’s all kinds of connected trails and bike lanes that run from Wellington station to the Amelia Earhart dam, connecting the northern strand rail trail to the orange line and even Charlestown, MA.
Did some waterfront exploring today on my rowbike in Boston. got home to discover the wood fairy finally visited me after all these years broke out the timber wolf and cleared the area for another load of BTUs. Neighbor across the street is having a tree taken down, the tree crew is just as happy to give the good stuff to me. They even bring it over with a bobcat.
So the tree company dumped everything on my yard, including the big stuff I didn’t want… So now I have a lifetime supply of ash on top of all the maple I already have, and it all needs to be cut up… My airplane broke in Portland Maine, ended up flying home it it. Just happened to catch the record breaking pumpkin on it’s way to the topsfield fair in Woburn as I was driving home. Making a dent in the mountain of wood my Son splits it on the splitter and my girls put it in the racks.
We all got this ebike together for my dad for Christmas, he’s really been enjoying it. His health was keeping him from going riding with my mother or the family, now he can pass all of us going up hill. He actually only turns the battery on for hills, making the range increase quite a bit. family visit for Columbus Day weekend, showed them the Salem windham rail trail, they were jealous. They have been rooting for the useless tracks in their town to be ripped out for over a decade, and after a prolonged fight they finally were removed this summer. NY has wasted many millions on a scenic rail road in the Adirondacks that can’t even run the trains they have, and none of the millions they get for rail maintenance ever did a thing for replacing the rotten ties or washed out rail bed. Now the right of way is posted no trespassing, and they’ll have to wait for the snowmobile season to be over, but they finally have a rail trail of their own. We’re super blessed to have so many in this area and a few more in the planning stages. Finally got my helicopter ride! It’s funny, I’ve only ridden in a helicopter twice in my life and both times it was a Boston medflight helicopter. The last time was over 20 years ago, I worked in a hanger at Hanscom Air Force base, and Boston medflight shared a hanger with us. I helped the mechanics with a task, so they brought me along on the test flight afterwards. This time my airplane broke on Nantucket and there’s no good way to get there otherwise. Had a great 50 minute flight there , got things taken care of and had a sunset cruise back to Bedford. Video clips from the flight from Bedford to Nantucket yeah I’m cheap, I get a bunch of plates for the price of one target at the range, trace the inside of the roll of masking tape for the bullseye. At 15-30 feet it’s the best training for pistol firing. got a pistol for mrs row, and took my son to the range for the first time to try it out. She likes the revolver because it’s easy to know how to use it in a pinch, no drills to remember if it doesn’t fire, just pull the trigger again. Used up some ammo I inherited from my grandfather, check out that price! Now it’s about $15 for 100 rounds, just shows you how much has been stolen from the value of a dollar…
If you’ve ever seen that facebook thing “ poorly describe what you do for a living”, my answer is “ hang out at airports and look at airplanes”. It’s tough but somebody has to do it. Drove up to Franconia notch to see some foliage, it was beautiful and sunny the whole way up 93 and so foggy you couldn’t see the mountains in the notch, along with howling winds and rain… so we drove out the north end of the notch and up Rt 3. Saw some great color and views there. Then came back down 302 to Brandon gap where it was overcast again but beautiful I have never been here before, but we had a great time climbing up to the falls just beyond the gap. Even saw the conway scenic rail way train going through the gap while we were there. I had planned on going to sabbaday falls for the first time, but saw that 112 was gridlocked getting off of 93, so this trip through Brandon gap was the way around the gridlock, then we got a treat by having the GPS take us over bear mountain gap road or something like that, it was an endless tunnel of flaming leaves with pull off spots with vistas like this along it. Best views of the whole trip!
Sabbaday falls is amazing, can’t believe this is my first time ever stopping there. You have to see it for yourself. made a little more progress on the mountain testing some new equipment at work, it’s a machine that does chest compressions automatically. Bike ride with my mother, starting at rabbit road in Salisbury. Ghost trail to great east marsh trail, across the Gillis bridge to the clipper city rail trail, to high street in Newburyport, over to the Whittier bridge where we took the William Lloyd Garrison rail trail back across the Rt 95 bridge to the rabbit rd parking lot. The sunset was amazing.
Inherited some very realistic airsoft pistols from my dad, the whole family had to try them out Putting the pool away for the winter, the deck becomes the storage shed for everything My big helper turned 17, we went to the range for his birthday treat, he got to try a bunch of different stuff. Some pictures from our mountain biking trails around Kenoza lake. He’s already way faster than me!
Rotating the tires on his future truck. Nissan Frontier rear axles have breathers that tend to plug up and then blow all of the oil out when they heat up from driving. Off-roaders know that they’ll suck water in when the axle is submerged anyway, so I added a remote breather kit to the truck. The end of the hose is inside the frame, which is good enough for me. Off road you want it up behind the tail light. someone managed to destroy the pole at the end of my driveway… glad they didn’t hit the house. He’s got a learners permit now, and prefers to drive my truck. Took a drive up past Sebago lake to pick up a replacement stove (no I didn’t pay that much for it) Sandblasted it And some stove polish. I grew up hauling in the wood to feed one of these. Back then it seemed about 4 feet tall and 4 feet wide, so I kept being shocked when I would look at one and realize how much smaller it is than the grandpa bear we have now. I know it’s big enough, the house I grew up in was bigger, had leaky windows and no insulation. And one of these Temp Wood stoves kept us plenty warm, even if feeding it felt like trying to fill a bottomless pit. pictures from our last mountain bike ride, it’s hard to get a full ride in with the sun gone an hour earlier
Hauling out the old cracked firebrick I could lift one side onto the dolly but not the other and old car jack lifted it up for any easy slide onto the dolly this stove was installed in’83, unfortunately it’s got more cracks than it was worth welding, including the import seal around the doors. Even with the draft fully shut it would burn just fine. I’m glad I didn’t have to get that in the house, it took some effort to get it out, going down hill the whole way. hasn’t been empty like this since’83 Replacement rolled in easy on a hand truck, kind of looks lost in that corner added a few more heaters to the haul this morning. can’t wait to fire her up for the first time, still have to sweep the chimney and set up the firewood rack on the back porch. anybody got an old lid lifter for a cook stove you don’t need anymore? That’s the only thing mr temple (yes they already named him, the old stove was mr fisher) needs to be 100%
I may never be able to see it for myself so thanks for sharing your pictures of it. It looks amazing. I love waterfalls especially ones that are different levels.
