Back a while ago there was talk about what they used for removing loose bark from round/logs etc. I was using my $3 cheapo machete today to remove bark from dead ash i was scrounging.

Ms. buZZsaw just asked what i wanted for Christmas and a MS500i was out of the question.

What do you use/suggest FHC? Pics helpful.

That's a bark spud from Tractor supply. The link wouldn't post here for some reason.

For log length on the ground with loose bark (maybe a layer of punk) a good hoe does the trick.

A Rogue Hoe Travis Tool meets the bill. For debarking you get a broad and narrow cutting edge with the Travis Tool. It is also a rake, tamper and has an edge for moving dirt (chips). Its made from a plow blade. There are other Rogue tools with an equally nice edge.

The easiest way I found to debark is drag ‘em.
Well, it’s a little simple and hand held...when you’re hookin’ up the chain.

Your adding one more step to a process that I’m trying to limit.

split and aged before final stacking, bark often falls off when tossed into the shed. I hunt old blow downs or standing dead, so it’s a head start with respect to bark.

stacking bark side down should have a similar effect, covered with an air gap.

Some instances the wood i scrounge has the bark loose enough to come off. It was easier and less mess here, to do it there. Not something ill intentionally do. If it comes off when unstacked thats good too.

If I am going to mill a log and want to remove bark first I use a draw knife.
If I am getting rid of loose bark on rounds that I am going to split I use a hatchet that is very sharp.
