I have a one year old 170 I use for carving. I know it isn’t safe, but if it doesn’t start with the choke lever in the run position. I full throttle start it. Your a big guy, so you can manage this safely. Not ideal, but it works. Good luck.

That sounds like the symptom for a bad crank seal. You go sideways and the seal starts sucking in air and when put up right it stops.

I got my wood done very early this year and tried to avoid electronics. Tried some new wood hobbies though. 4E04FDE0-A6DA-4ADA-B3AA-9582A1B01DEE.jpeg 6AC9188E-AD07-4C4D-984B-92C2BEBCD445.jpeg AA4BB029-0437-4AA0-8581-73621423E93F.jpeg 1564750E-3496-4A7A-81D3-AB7A9AD322FF.jpeg

Gave the 170 another chance today. Had some smaller cherry rounds to buck. Burped fine on full choke and started at half. Set her down to idle for a minute, wouldnt get to full chain speed bucking. Stalled a couple times immediately after i finished a cut. After bucking a few logs, i got frustrated :hair:and the 194t finished them off.

I think it's time for the saw to hit the hiway. Life is too short to deal with a poor running saw.

I agree even if its under warranty and dealer will get to right it. 193 or 194 rear handle in my future. Im tired of being aggravated when wanting to cut wood.

Your gas tank may not be venting. Try opening the gas cap for a breather between cuts. In any case it's Stihl's problem if it's still on warranty. An MS170 is nothing for warranty compared to a $half $million John Deere combine. One of the things they do on the pre-delivery check is to back her up to a bush, open up all the hatches, wind her up to full throttle and dodge all the nuts and bolts that fly out.

Sure, as long as the saw is described as having issues before “sending it down the road.”

No CL for the 170 Brad (errrr .... Corleone)
For most of us it's a "pick up" saw when the usual ones get hung up, bound, or just out of it in normal use.
It is ideal for limbing in severe blowdowns to clear up for the big boys.
Stihl made it as a "woman's" saw ( excuse the chauvin please ) : light, simple, really reliable ( most of the time).
Your dealer has to do the fix. Be your own advocate.
