Use the ram on a rope to the bed to tug and chock and tug again, etc,

Or flatten the tires on the truck

    Or both

    I suppose that’s 3

With the gate up like that he would have complete visibility of the splitter going up the ramps. I'd give that a shot. But then again, I've done some F'd up things when it comes to towing in the past.

You kinda gotta be a little unhinged driving wreckers.

Glad it worked for you. Little harbor freight winch mounted on a piece of wood behind the wheel wells might not be a bad idea. Maybe a bit more controlled ascent too? Again...glad it worked for you this time.

I would try it. As someone mentioned you can see it pretty well in the rear view mirror.
My tuck is so high, and I’m short and broken, I often stand outside and fine tune the driving to get my trailer hitched. Saves me from jumping in and out of the cab. Think that’s why they developed back up cams :)

I used my JD, with a trailer ball in the bucket, to roll my splitter up onto a work deck. I'm sure, if I'd tried to back it up, I would have seen a splitter barrel roll before I was done...:D

It'll be a "Jeep" splitter when it pops off that ball and loads itself into the back of the Cherokee!

Not me. I used to load my motorcycles in a pickup truck but would find level ground to roll them straight on/off. My splitter is almost 500 pounds and if it went over not sure how I'd ever get it back on it's wheels alone not mention potential damage.

This is what I do when I need to take the splitter with me

    E356030D-30D1-45C9-86B1-9F49D0E71473.jpeg

We have a 27 Ton DHT splitter, if the trailer deck is Dry I can pull it up by hand. I have thought about mounting a Harbor Freight 2,500# or 3,500# winch to the front rails of the trailer walls to make it easier, but alas, I am a cheap bastard and have yet to prioritize the Time or Money to do it yet.

I have a couple of 4’ 2”x12”s and some 6x6” blocks that help ease the slope when I need to, but most the time I just pull it up the ramp and tie her down

We have piggy backed the splitter in the big trailer wood cutting in the past, I can get about a cord on and still load the splitter. If I push the splitter in, and then unbolt the tongue and stand up the splitter beam, I can get about a cord and a half on, either way makes the trailer balance heavier on the tongue than I would normally load, but my old F350 takes it in stride

If I want to split and load more than a cord and a half, the Wife has to drive her Expedition to haul the splitter home, and we often go places to cut, that she wouldn’t want to take her car

    Doug

I see you’ve put some thought into your operation. Ok but I gotta ask. What’s the reason for splitting on top of a trailer?

Working height. Bad lower back for years. Lets me keep all of the work at bench height. Plus... I really like trying ways to fight gravity... ;)

I hear ya on the bad back and gravity thing.
So you split vertical on that platform?

Yep... and the lift brings the rounds right to the biz end of the splitter. Works great but is way too much to set up for a short session. Have thought about rigging the lift in between 2 trees, and rolling the splitter up on a couple car ramps I've got, to get the horiz layout almost at bench height... but all down in the woods. I'll prolly plan to do some planning about a plan... tomorrow... or Thursday...

I have put splitter in back of my pickup twice and both times found a low spot for truck to sit in. Couple of ramps were only a slight incline to truck. I pulled splitter in by myself trailer ball end first and lowered into corner of bed. Straps locked splitter in place.
Unloading was interesting. Once was the reverse of loading Using a low spot and worked well. The other was from full height and was difficult. Lots of weight going down ramp now good!
I modified a small trailer to carry the splitter after this experience. I drilled a hole in the front of trailer metal angle iron and put a trailer ball there. Now I pull splitter up ramp and lock onto ball. What a difference. Only tie down rear of splitter.

Couldn’t find a pic of splitter On trailer but here’s some with a small trailer mounted. You get the idea.

The ball fastened to the trailer rail is a great idea! Very secure.
