I burn 21 / 22", please deliver to: **** **** , Galion, OH I would prefer them split, but I could do that if I have to, maybe, I guess...
Cut to your optimum and deal with the cookies. Cookies that size will integrate fine into your stacks and your stove will gobble them up when the time comes.
This... The shorts might just be perfect sized to throw on top of the splits to fill up the stove. You might need to halve the shorts, depending on the size of the cookies, and your stove.
I got it from a shopko store in Valentine (Easy Livin' 3000 you probably know where that is) when they were closing up across the country. I got 2 more similar ones at a different store also. I’ve seen them with balls in them, this one had pillows.
It’s actually working quite well. I was afraid the chunks would fall out on their own. But that’s not the case yet. I got 2 more to reassemble also but haven’t got this one filled completely yet. Pull out from the upper part of the dispenser opening & haven’t come close to getting bit yet
They look like they make great ends, too. And, I love the recycling/reuse aspect. It's funny the way I look at so many things now through the lense of, how might I use it in my wood heating scheme, shop, or garden. Well done.
Great ideas. Those 3-6" pieces would work perfect in the wood fired hot tub or just send those 21" pieces whole for the owb.
If it's good stuff like oak, hickory or locust, I would cut in half, that way I can load my stove east west for a slow burn. If it's anything else, make some cookies, or little chunkies. I split the longer stuff first, and fill up my cutting rack. I have been thinking about modifying it...built a platform to set it on, that way all the chunkies fall into a wheelbarrow. That's the only PITA is picking them all up.
I've ended up with a whole bunch of 4 inch cookies when someone else cut the rounds. I stacked the cookies whole in and amongst splits using the splits like stickers for sawmill boards so they'd dry well. . Half of the cookies split on their own and the other half were pretty easy to break in half giving me good size chunks to throw in the stove on top of coals. Better than cutting splits down to size - and I've done that too. They all burn.
Thanks...My splitter fits up to 28 inches. Split em, load em, rip em, stack it, all about 1/6th a cord at a time.
Agreed, trim to preferred length. If you cut them in half, you have a bunch of splits that won't fill the firebox. Short chunks in a wire bin like that dry really fast, with all the air that blows through. I like to smash my hand occasionally, just to remind me I'm alive.
Cut your length and use cookies/chunks for shoulder season. I do it all the time. I posted a similar thread last year I hate to cut you short
Lots of great ideas all. Over the years, I've been very sloppy on my lengths but trying to improve, sort of. It is nice to have the correct size to really fill the stove.
