I agree with LW on the negative aspect of modding the fireplace.

"If it were me" I would look real hard at a corner install to the left of the fire place.
There are some cool things that can be done very inexpensively.

Here is what I did for our small Whitfield install.

The graphic work took a roll of blue masking tape, some dark rock gray paint and a bit of finesse..

Get after that wall with a stud finder and see where the studs are....then rock and roll.

Nice part is....in the future it would be easy to remove the stove, patch the sheet rock and it would be as though it never happened.

Does not look like there is a window on that side either.

My wall graphic and mantle were whipped up and laid out in a day.

    Did the paint and zooooop....done

A little thought and clever paint work could make a corner stove install look like it is all part of the fire place....
Duplicate the brick color to match the fire place..

The other side has the window and the baseboard heater to fight with (bad choice)

    Just my 2 cents

As Cleanfire asked above, how tall is the chimney? Also, there are chimney caps that have built-in oak connections.

Is there enough room inside the existing fireplace flue to easily run both a 4” liner and a 3” air intake all the way up to the top?

Snowy, I have to say that set up you did is very very cool. I love the simplicity and inventiveness that went into it and it looks great.

She likes the idea of a stove insert because of the look and focal point as stated. IMO that's the route you have to go. Some towns may require a pipe all the way up the flue, others may not. My experience is it's really not necessary but once I did install a full line the stove ran better and it's easier to clean the chimney. A single wall liner is all that would be needed; also there are many affordable inserts on the market.

    Thank you.

When we remodeled things back in June of 16 it looked a lot different.
We tore out the carpeting and laid a laminate flooring (1000 sq feet) in the dining room/living room.
Found it on Craig's list (Used from an upscale home remodel....with all the pad for $200)
With some creative "elbow grease" and very little $$$ one can achieve some marvelous results.
Stove with Floor pad and pipe/thimble $200
    Flooring $200
Paint for room and the dark gray for the graphics $50

We added new drapes, painted the room
Custom fabricated the drapery tubes and brackets.
All together the complete makeover was under $1000 (Stove, floor, paint, drapes yada yada...and some Tylenol for the sore body.

Here is the stove today after I added the new custom controller.

What can be achieved is endless and does not have to cost a fortune..

Our large stove in the family room and with its new controller.

    Busy busy busy.....

Aesthetically, an insert with a liner up the chimney and potentially an OAK would work. Get an estimate and see what the options price out as.

Agreeing with the insert at this point, that appears to be the best option. Or a free standing setup like PelletHound has, IF there is enough room in that flue to run a 4" liner and 3" air intake all the way to the top. I think if you try to drop a freestanding stove and run the flue and air intake around the side of the fireplace, you're going to end up with an albatross. If you ultimately decide the existing fireplace / flue solution is too difficult to navigate, what about a thru the wall setup in a different part of the room (different wall altogether).

    One thing not mentioned...
Add the pellet stove to the corner and you get added benefits.
The fireplace can be used in a power outage...
The pellet stove can be easily removed later if desired ....moving and take the stove with you.

The cost for a good used stove can be drastically lower than a new one.
A short direct vent out the wall is very inexpensive...

    Just some thoughts.

I wish we had a fireplace or a wood stove that we could count on during outages...

    Albatross is a subjective term.
Creativity can create some wonderful things.

Don't want to thread-jack, 10 second summary: Betsy nuked her knee (right patella) back in late March, workplace accident, 6 months of Dr's / PT appts / Rob working 2 jobs.. to pay the bills. No time to play.. Let alone sleep. :picard: Arthroscopic surgery today to clean up the knee / scar tissue / get her back to 95+ % (!) Things are looking better here. I may even have a day off soon for a Beer. :coldone:

ChandlerR - this is what I would do, if using the existing chimney, if here.

Our 'custom' setup w/o venting running up the chimney -does- affect stove draft in high wind - w/ little ones in the house, and using a stove that can put out some serious BTU's, (vs. the small 'Princess' stove here) I wouldn't be messing around. I'd take the hit on the extra (4" vent, 3" OAK) liner vent cost up-front to do it right: for comfort, and peace of mind.
Lots of great ideas / installation options above to consider. :campfire:

What do you think of venting out to the wall next to the hearth? I figure a Tee, two elbows and 5 feet of pipe.

Just realized there was another whole page of replies! LOL. I think we have two options. Insert with pipe and vent up the chimney (about 25 feet) or corner install. I got some prices and have given them to my daughter. Surprisingly both options are close in price to each other. About $2000

    For what its's worth...

Keep in mind this...once you stuff the pipe up the chimney ...the option of using the fireplace in a power outage is gone..

We get caught every so often with power outages and a fireplace would sure be sweet...

A generator is another great solution for that concern.

Gen set is not bad, as long as you use an inverter type gen set...

The electronics just don't like the dirty power that most of the cheap gen sets put out.

Even a short stint on dirty power can trash the controls on the stove and the cost gets stiff....
I have no particular issue with a good gen set....but I know from past experiences that a gen set is another "What if " in the equation. Gotta keep it serviced and ready to go, keep fuel on hand for a few days worth of running.

If this is all managed then it's a good deal... Having some dry firewood in the garage or shed ???? will last for years without any need to fool with it and a fire can be tossed in a fireplace within a few minutes....
Get a nice bed of coals going and even cook dinner in/on a cast iron pot or skillet (Been there done that back in 62 when we had "BIG BLOW" (Columbus day wind storm 1962)
We were out of power here at the ranch for about 3 weeks...Mom always had a great meal on the table even cooking in the fireplace....
We closed off all unnecessary rooms to keep the warmth in the living room and we did fine.
We ran the well pump with the tractor gen set... (For another thread)

We were chatting over dinner last night about adding a small wood stove in the corner of our family room....been down this road many times, and with 3 stoves in the house now it does start to look a bit busy when ya start talking about adding more.

My daughter rolled her eyes and commented...."How many corners ya have left" :picard:

Actually only one that is suitable on an outside wall....:(
Every other usable outside corner has a stove in it... The more the merrier ???? ahhhh warmer
