Homemade pickaroon with a reclaimed Fiskars handle.

As all you regular FHC memebers know i broke my Fiskars X27 last week (see "Broken F iskars!"). I repurposed the head as a wedge Saturday and gave it a try which it worked well. I decided to make a pickaroon with the handle after a couple FHC member suggestions. I was at Home Depot this afternoon and picked up a 5/16 x 5" galvanized carriage bolt with nut and washer Maybe ten minutes on the grinder and another ten drilling and assembly I have a decent tool! The plastic was some tough stuff to drill through, but it works very well. The first log I "stabbed" was a basswood split. I embedded it about halfway up the point and had to unscrew the split to remove it. By coincidence the length turned out perfect for my 6' stature. Another logging tool I’ve never owned or used and it looks to be one that once I get used to I’ll say "how did I ever make firewood without it"? I’m sure my aging back will say the same!

 

Need to craft the proper curve to hook and release, I can hook em, sling em to the splitter and never bend over-check my sig...a hookaroon or pickaroon is invaluable...a wonderful tool in your arsenal...Hoard on buZZsaw BRAD , Hoard on

 

Yup I agree. The tips needs to be bent and heat treated.

I made a long handled one out of round nosed shovel handle with a metal end on it. Great for unloading the pick up and trailer.

 

most of the use will be for that purpose. My PU is a bit taller so i cant always reach rounds/splits. With use im sure it will get tweaked accordingly.

 

Necessity (and a broken tool) is the mother of invention.

Sounds like a pickeroon may Ben just what my back needs! I don’t have any problem with the actual splitting it’s the bending over and picking up that gets to me.

 

Does anyone have any suggestions on a decent pickeroon? I am about 6’3”

 

I saw one made by Stihl, but havent tried any. Tractor supply may have them or Harbor Freight. My main use (for now) for mine is pulling splits/rounds out of my truck bed. Seems like there is always some out of reach

 

rebelduckman Logrite makes them for Stiihl, just painted orange with an upcharge but I’m not judging-I’m 6’ and the 30” works well for me, it’s basically what’s comfortable for you-Main thing starting out is dont get all cutesy with it and hook your shin bone...I think my pic and cant hook both came from Baileys and I use them regualarly-just FYI-I love the weight and feel of the aluminum and steel, the balance is good for me and the grip wrap is nice-many prefer a wooden handle...Always nice to have options

 

Great advice. I was surprised at the time it took to become proficient with mine. Maybe I’m just more uncoordinated than most but I just missed driving it through my shin a few times Great tool tho, wouldn’t want to live without it.

 

I like the pickaroon for moving splits around but for picking up rounds with not much bending I like one of these. I am 6’-1” with a bad back and can pickup 50-60# rounds with little effort .

 

Would be good if they made a bigger set.

I have a set of these. Not a bad idea. Rounds need to be a fairly uniform length. Had to rebuild mine entirely after a few months. Haven’t used them in awhile.

Has anyone tried the LogOx tool? Looks to be a handy tool, but its a little pricey. Would like to try before I buy!
I have the Fiskars XA22 it is 28" I am 5'11" it works good definitely a back saver.
