I have little experience with wood stoves but from reading what folks have to say about Woodstock and their performance and being nothing short of artwork to look at, that would be at the top of my list for sure.
I gave my wife the link to send them yesterday. I told her that FHC would be their best bet in getting an unbiased opinion, aka you're not trying to sell them something they don't need to line your pockets. I made sure they understand that this place would be best for advice from people that have years of experience. It's up to them if they want to use it as a resource. I hope they do the right thing and sign up.
Inconvenient truth: I wanted to get a Blaze King Ashford. Not a bad looker. The only problem was the hearth site and $$$$. the BK thermometer in the far rear of the Ashford that controls the burn needs to be > 6" from any surface. Not a choice for us. Also BK stoves are ~ 20% more $$$ than similar stoves. BTW: BK answered all questions directly. Note that Woodstock has exceptional customer service and products IF you like the styles ( she did not ). Well worth the visit to their plant. And, they offer an unlimited 6 month return !
For that size house ( and not knowing the heat losses in Winter ) The Woodstock ABsolute Steel has a stated nice range of burn capability for a 2.5 cu ft stove. IF they want to do catalyst . There's far too many nice stoves in steel and/or cast iron in the 2.5 cu ft range to pick one for someone else. Who's the nice dealer in the area and what do they sell ? Having done "small fires in a big stove" don't plan on it. It is a PITA and a good way for some to soot up a chimney. Buy the right size stove for your house just like you would not buy too big a furnace or boiler.
Maybe I overlooked this Will the stove be on the main level IE; living room/family room? open floor plan? or in a basement where the look isn't as important. If it's in the basement, stove will need to be bigger
It would seem 45,000 - 55,000 btu output would be about right for that size home for sure in that area. Some of the stoves I like.

I have and like an SBI stove. Very easy on the wallet, new, and works great. Not beauties, but very utilitarian, and my stove would have left me with $3,000 left over on a $4,000 budget. Drolet, Century, Osburn, Enerzone, Flame Energy are all very similar, made by SBI. Good customer support, so far anyway. Just something to look at.
NC-30 can be had cheap, and will heat that house. After using that for a year, they will know whether it is a long term solution or a more expensive one is needed. Either way $4000 will be enough!

Sounds like the perfect application for a Woodstock Fireview. Cat stove so it can simmer. Soapstone so it’s an even smooth warmth. Problem is no dealers and NH is a long way from Arizona. They would need to know that is THE stove they want and buy it unseen and ship. Some people can do that, others want to kick tires. With a Woodstock your tires never go flat Blaze king is another good stove on the west coast. Remind them the budget needs to include a chimney or liner.
