We have an FAA recognized air strip on the ice in Alton Bay on Lake Winnepausaukee. There's vids on youtube of planes landing there. A plane just slid and crashed into a snowbank landing there the other day, bent the prop and landing gear. We have a winter carnival each Feb. on the lake with 20 or 30 planes on ice and hundreds of cars out there.

Very true! Up against cliffs is another bad one. Shallow water can be iffy as well especially late season. We have some lakes that are spring fed and can cause us problems as well. River ice is the scariest though. I did a stint as an ice fishing guide. My insurance company said I wasnt insured to take clients out on frozen rivers. I dont blame them.
Yes, the hydrostatic wave that you push with your vehicle when you drive on ice. Ive tried to educate people when Im out on the ice and I see people driving fast. I dont do much driving on ice around here any more and prefer to drag a sled with my gear to get some exercise.

I've seen a couple of Groomers that have gone through the ice and many many cars and trucks. I've seen em sink out of sight, and some go nose in and back end sticking up in the air and get frozen tight just like that. They look like bad art work. We call bad ice rotten ice.

Seriously. How many of us in the lower 48 would attend an Alaska GTG?
You could count me in, with much advance notice, no matter what time of the year. Been there spring, fall and summer. Would love to visit Alaska in the winter. It just may happen soon. I just signed up for an Alaska Airlines credit card. With my planned travels this year and the signup bonues, I should have mileage for a free ride. At least one way.
Been there maybe 8 times. You need to visit Alaska at least once in your lifetime.
We are going to Alaska this year. I am still on the fence if I will send my wife home and every one else home on the plane and book my return later. If I book my return later, it would be to visit bogydave Cold Trigger Finger Rope and take in some fly-fishing.
We are on a cruise this time and the ship disembarks in Seward and will be spending 4 days with my sister in Anchorage.
Anyone in the Seward or Anchorage area?

About 10ish hours away. Keep us in the loop. If you make it to Tangle, here are some pics from Delta Junction. DA0D0064-261F-4C06-9EF0-AD2955B5881D.jpeg 148021E5-6D1E-48A4-9C80-D8FC6114C845.jpeg

I will keep all our Alaskan brothers in the loop.
Sis, from Anchorage, is coming in tomorrow. I plan on talking to her about the possibilities. bogydave is not that far from Anchorage so it would highly possible to visit him. I will have to get a hold of him when I have a little more finalization of my itinerary.

Lol! I’ve been there in the early fall. Unbelievable experience, I’d like to experience the winter. I’m having a hard time having time to go to backwoods savage GTG. A GTG at Ropes was just a fun thought.

My son and I were on a fall black bear hunt, out of Talkeetna, with my deceased brother-in-law in the late '90s.
Don't blame you at all on a wishful thought. :D:D Beautiful place

A very damp chilly 28F here. Stiff East wind making it worse. Another "storm" supposed to bring us 6" overnight, then maybe some freezing rain, then the lake effect is supposed to crank up. 10-12" possible by late Wednesday they say. Then rinse & repeat for the end of the week. Weather hasn't been cold enough for good solid ground & it's been cloudy every day except Saturday. Elm & Beech in the boiler. Plow truck's ready.
