So I’ve had this suncourt through wall fan sitting around for a year. Bought it to put between the stove room and bedroom that gets fairly chilly with the door closed. This room is where the new baby is now so with the extreme cold they’re forecasting I figure I’d get it done. Install was easy which I knew it should be but you never know what your going to find when you cut into the walls on a old house. The fan is corded and I’m not too keen on how the cord looks hanging down from the wall. I’ll run the cord through the wall cavity and hardwire it in somewhere in the basement eventually but that’s a project for another day(and one that will definitely involve expletives). The bedroom with door shut is usually around 55-65 depending on outside temps. Stove room hovers around 70-80 depending on temps and how hard I’m running it. The fan has been running for about 6 hours now and both the stove room and bedroom are 74. In the short term I’d call this a success. I am just curious how this will effect the flow in the rest of the house. I can definitely feel a different air flow from my normal spot on the recliner. Haven’t checked the temps upstairs to see if they are different than the norm. Anyone using fans such as these? Positives/negatives/ observations? Fan is up to the right.
That sounds and looks like a pretty good idea for your little one. I personally would not want my bed room that warm but for a child that is a good idea.
I had one in my former house between the living room and the bedroom closet. The cord plugged into an outlet in the closet so it wasn’t visible. It helped keep the bedroom and the rest of the back of the house a bit warmer in the winter. It ran on low most of the heating season.
Blowing heated air from the stove room into the baby’s room? That would change airflow characteristics in the immediate area.
Yes it will, it is cooler in the stove room which I’m ok with actually. Just wondering how it’s going to effect flow to the upstairs. Guess I’ll just have to wait a bit and see. I like it cooler to sleep so as long as it doesn’t rob too much heat from our upstairs bedroom I’m ok with it.
Surprisingly quiet on low. It’s slightly louder on the output side. Can’t hear it over the insert blower.
Yeah, keep it on low and remember to leave the door to the kids room open just a touch (at least) for air circulation. 74 in bedroom may prove to be too warm, though. You could even cut in a low through the wall register (double sided) for the air flow. Fan into bedroom, low wall cooler air out of bedroom into adjoining room?
I’d point it back at the stove room. Should minimize the effect of letting the cool air out the bedroom door into the stream of cool air from the rest of the house along its path.
Right. But that may tend to short cycle the air flow instead of across the entire room. That's why forced air systems have supply registers on one side of the room and return air grilles on the other side of the room....ideally.
We've gotten in the habit of leaving doors open in Winter except for when one needs a little privacy . Un-stratifying air in rooms usually makes rooms more comfortable especially for those sitting on couches and chairs in the lower levels of stratified air. Start moving too much air though and the moving air can cause a chilling effect . Nice in the Summer, not so much in Winter. We'll use our one ceiling fan sometimes as it helps move the air around in a wider area than you might think. The one we have the slowest setting could be just a tad slower, but it isn't annoying either.
Thanks guys. All good advice and ideas. I’ll play around with it and see how things go. With this upcoming cold I’m sure I’ll get it figured out.
