I have been looking at ECODiesel Ram 1500. I want the bigger cab and a short bed is fine... I will be using it as a family wagon!!! I will use my 98 Ram Cummins or my 03 Silverado 3500 4 door dually (it is a boat)

I'm pushing half a million on my 03 7.3. I pulled campers, mostly heavy 5th wheels, for about half of those miles and it has been very reliable. I installed new injectors last August and I need to rebuild the turbo but it still pulls strong and doesn't burn oil.

Please join the conversation and dispel the wrongs. I've already been corrected. Which I appreciate. Knowledge is power.

I can't get by with Less!! (Trucks are $ makers for me)
Just took delivery of this today ,,,, going on the Kodiak behind it in the next few weeks.
    I've owned 2 early 90's 7.3s and a 5.9.
    This is my first Duramax.
Very impressed with power and mileage in a truck this size.

    16'
12ish MPG running around rural roads.
I haven't had it in town or interstate yet.
Got a deal on it this last summer so I bought it to put together this winter during our slow time. I've only run a few tanks through it . I get that 4000lb wind sail off it and mileage should increase .

12mpg is respectable considering what it is. That 4500 will get some work done.

It was always about MPG. Just like the diesels of yesteryear. The old IDI’s and Detroit 6.2/6.5 engines were never meant to be the highway combat superiority option. They were durable, and reasonably capable engines meant to go in trucks that got a ton of miles put on them. If you had big campers/trailers to tow, that’s what the big block gassers were for. But we all know the MPG story there.

Hence the confusion, diesels have shifted roles from being the bean-counter’s engine, to being the premium option for capability. That shift began with the introduction of he PowerStroke 7.3L in 1995 and was in full swing by the time the DMax was introduced in 2001. Folks expecting a diesel half-ton to dominate on performance, durability AND mpg (which is exactly what was being offered on HD pickups form 2001-2007) have been disappointed with every offering.

This is slightly off topic but this would be a good thread to share it in since all the diesel truck owners are here. I wanted to share this deal with you.

I did a video on my YT about the Meross MSS620 outdoor wifi smart plug. I use this to control the block heater on my truck.

Meross gave me a 30% off coupon code for it, making it under $20, which is a great deal for an outdoor wifi smart plug.

Link to Amazon (not an affiliate link so I don't make $$$ from it)

Here is my video that explains it.

10 Amp may not be enough for some block heaters.
Mines on a 20 amp and it'll kick the breaker sometimes when there's other stuff on that circuit.I think that's aimed more at outdoor lights.

My block heater wouldn't run on a 10amp circuit either. Those things draw quite a bit. I had it on a 14ga cord & went to 12ga. It smoked the contacts over time. Cool product though.

Could always wire that device into a relay to run a heavier load.

Yup, block heaters are notorious for burning up cords, etc.
I bought a set of injectors from a guy that was parting out his 7.3 PS after it burnt up...had it all serviced and loaded up to tow their 5th wheel camper to Florida for family vacation the next morning...woke up in the middle of the night to find the truck was on fire...they determined the block heater burnt up! :hair:

They use the lightest cord on those. Extension cords have heavier insulation/wire .I've seen many wore through and shorted out on motor or frame.

We just did a block heater in a New Holland tractor. It was a 400 or 500 watt heater. The factory block heater in a powerstroke is 1000 watts or less depending on the engine. Watts/volts=amps. 1000/120=9amps. There are some aftermarket block heaters I have seen for powerstrokes as high as 1500 watts which would be a no go. If your block heater is burning up cords or tripping breakers, you have a bad block heater, block heater cord, or bad breaker(only if it is tripping the breaker). A GFCI breaker can be overly sensitive sometimes. I read something the other day about some brand of GFCI breakers that are not but I don't recall the name. It was not something you can get in a box store.
