You will really like the amount of heat you get coming out of the front of the stove with the blower on and that deck on there .
My Stove comes comes stock with one on it and I love it.,
Remember with that deck there and the blower on, Your stove top thermometers Will be lying to you, As the air moving over them Will keep them cooler and then The actual stove top temp is

When you are reloading It is kind of hard to get your stove top temperature up When you forget turn off your blower , Don't ask me how I know :headbang::rofl:
I run my blower on low and it is really quiet

I have not really used mine as of yet. I'm trying to get an idea of how well it does without running the blower so that I can see how much of a difference it makes whenever I do start to run it.

Take caution running it without the blower on because the Stove top will get far hotter. That added steel plate will insulate the heat. Best to get a probe type thermo for your flue

If I am not going to run the blower? I take the convection deck off to stop the build up of heat.

Last thing you want is to warp something.

Good job brenndatomu on sending Marvin that deck.

    Here is mine

Funny you mention a flue probe. I have one installed 18" above the stove outlet. It is almost always the same temp or even about 100* higher than the STT. The flue damper is directly below the probe but I haven't been using it so it has remained in the open position. It is so close to the probe that I believe it may brush against it if I move the damper.

I have just been wondering if this is odd that my flue temps remain so high? The heat output seems fine, I'm just curious. Also, is it okay to see a little bit of smoke out of the stack? Even with ripping secondaries I seem to get a slight bit of smoke. I'm burning elm that is about 21-22% MC. Outside air temp is about 34* tonight.

I have not verified my STT with an infrared yet. I'm waiting until after Christmas to order one.

My 30 flue temp is usually higher than STT. Don't let that bother you, temperature ≠ heat.

I think you'll find as time goes on, you try different settings and what works best for you will become apparent. I can't say if your stack temp is high but try tweaking the damper just a touch like a 1/4 and see. Try shutting the air down a little sooner or in bigger increments. If you go a little too far, the fire will eventually catch up but will take some time. In fact (with my stove at least) you fare much better on a stalled fire before you have it all charred than after you've charred it all, got the box hot, and cut air suddenly. That's a recipe for making your stove woof.

As for the smoke, are you sure it's smoke and not steam? If you have 10 lbs of seasoned wood, you'll still be pushing 2 lbs of water through the chimney in the form of steam no matter what. And steam takes up 1700 x the volume of water so it's probably looking worse than it is. In the end your chimney will tell you all you need to know.

I suppose it could be steam. I was thinking it was smoke though because it was drifting pretty far before dissipating. Doesnt steam fade away pretty quick after leaving the cap?

It was only a little bit, just enough to see it coming out. I was just curious if this is a problem or not. I'm still working out the kinks in how I run this thing.

It depends on a lot of things...temp, wind, dew point, etc...our 600k BTU gas fired boiler at work can leave a pretty long steam trail some days...50-75' I would guess...sometimes its gone in 5-10'. And that's all steam, no smoke at all.
Smoke tends to have a bit of a "blue" tint to it...where steam is usually more white and wispy...I would be surprised if you are getting smoke once things are rolling good because the 30 has pretty good emissions testing #'s...but I suppose since your wood is a bit over 20%, maybe that's making it smoke a lil? Dunno

My flu temps most of the time , are higher than the stove .
I don't know if you really need to worry about taking your Convection deck off When not running the blower , Mine doesn't come off And I run mine mostly with The blower off Because I need to get the heat down the Hall Not blow it all into the stove room, But then again my stove was designed for having a convection deck.
I don't know if papadave Runs his Without the blower turned on

Get to thinking about it...any insert stove would be much more restricted to dissipate heat without the blower running than the 30 with just a deck on it...and my insert stove has the ability to shut the blower completely off, its from the factory this way too...I actually added a switch to force it on...the factory thermo switch is slow to come on, and cuts out early too...

I run my stove with the fan all the time... I’d hate to see my stove without the fan blowing....

    Yeah , any insert needs a blower running ,I think, don't they ? .
My convection deck only the covers About half the stove top , Looks like it's about the same on Marvin's set up .
Marvin, You will figure out whether you need it on or off :)

I would think if it was that important, they would not give you the off switch...like mine has
