Adding LED work lights on a tractor.

Hey guys. Kind of embarrassed to ask about this...but, I can always learn something.

I got 4 LED spot/work lights that I want to put on the upper cab of my tractor. I need to wire them up.

I have wired up the old style ones before without issue...not sure if LEDs are different?

I was going to run a Hot Wire to the cab, put in an in line fuse, then go to a on/off switch, then run power out to the lights. Grounding to metal.

...is it that straight forward?

....do I need a relay?

 

If the switch is rated for over the current required by the four lights then you don't need the relay.

 

I am thinking the LEDs draw so little that I should be okay (hooking up 2 lights on 1 switch).

 

They draw very little power, I ran my strobe on 2 9volt batteries until I got around to wiring it in.

 

No need for a relay as long as your switch is rated for more than the total wattage being used by all the lites...which isn't that much on LED...what you have proposed should work just fine

 

I want to do the same thing but luckily my cab has lights already on all 4 corners. If you are running the wire from the battery I would install the fuse right at the battery. Good luck and post pictures!

 

Depending on the tractor, there may be some accessory terminals available in a fuse block in the cab already? Or if not, I really like using fuse taps instead of splicing into stuff. You can get them at most automotive parts stores...some farm/hardware stores too.

What lights are you getting? I bought a pair of LED lights for my kawasaki, and I only wired up one, and left the other original halogen light on the other side since it works. Holy schnikeys is that led bright, and less than half the watts.

 

I already have the lights. They are about 3x5 and called a wide angle flood light. It's pretty rough snow blowing and back blading with no rear lights and just the head lights...not as safe as I would like it to be.

 

These are the ones I've got. They work great.

 

Polarity is critical with LED lights where it wasn't before with incandescent lights. LEDs won't work if the positive and negative are reversed.

I'd like to see which lights you got and what you think of them once you get them going. I'm considering adding some to my tractor. I helped a neighbor yesterday get their cars unstuck from after they slid off their driveway and was thinking I may have to do it at night sometime.
