I use a soot eater from the bottom up, and used this neat little hack I learned here a few years ago. Used milk jug and a shop vac, little to no mess!

One thing I'll mention about that video, he didn't really use the plastic the way it is meant to be used...normally put the SE up the flue with a section or two of rod on it, then tape the plastic to the open firebox, threading the rod through a small hole in the plastic as you go. Then make a second hole to stuff your shop vac hose into.
I clean going up, and then back down also...suppose if your flue is pretty clean, you could do one way.

That's highway robbery, better start cleaning it out yourself , soot eater or brush , if its green wood your burning do it a few weeks apart, dry wood every 4 months to have a piece of mind

I do my own now. I use a brush from the top down since I want to check everything up top at the same time Had three different sweeps that never did a good job. They never got all the crud off the smoke shelf in the fireplace, They never took out the ceramic blanket in the wood stove. (They are afraid of breaking the baffle boards) Most don't even get on the roof to check out the masonry crown. The one that did wanted to pour me a new crown for $1500. I got some crown coat five years ago and its still as good as the day I put in on. Good luck on finding one you can trust. (No disrespect Well Seasoned) I know you are one that can be trusted.

So there is more to clean then just the smoke stack.. Guess I'll be googling stuff today.. My insert is a bit old and not in current code, however it was within code when it was put in.. I don't recall the name of the system it uses to burn but the guy that inspected it said he doesn't see it very often..

Amazon is on it, my new Sooteater will be here tomorrow.. However all cleaning will have to wait a day as I am going to Metallica!! :dex::dex::dex::D
