Did you read the part about the extra tolerance? Sheesh! It is a long bed, without a toolbox. It will haul wood in the Rockies. Is your avatar a spoof?
Yea I read about the tight tolerance. I am a self taught backyard guy. Is seems against my logic. Wouldn't you want a thinner oil for tighter tolerences? Which is why older engines used 10w40 vs newer tighter tolerences engines that run 5w20? I'm really asking more as I am stating something that seems logical to me. A 2015 engine has way tighter tolerences than a 1975 motor.
The engine is sloppy. Years ago, most of our tractors gas. Every few years the engines got broke down. The nice thing about sloppy motors, anything that gets past air filter, the chances of extreme piston destruction are less. Down side is no power. Less effecient ect. But, in that application it becomes minor. I don't care for how he set the motor up, but the truck is perfect for me. I'm not a kid that jacks up his truck, then rods it out. It is a work truck. Does that make more sense anyway?
Gotcha! it's common to use what ya got! Flat tappets are fine, they just aren't quite as good for agreesive lobe angles but for the application it's good to go. You could *probably* get away with synthetic but not worth the risk. It's been 10+ years since I've needed zinc oils changed alot since then. I still remember lead gas additive!!!! What's funny is most modern engines burn oil(the manual says it's normal!), or piston slap. Almost every one of em. Not the old chevy 350s!!
You nailed it. Engine builder with his own shop for years. You know he had cams and about everything in old stock. He told me. Nice guy. Without that zinc, there is not much protection. I'm just glad he was honest enough to let me know. I dropped the break in oil a couple days ago. Ofcourse the stock oil pressure gauge kinda scares you.
Oh ok , makes total sense if the tolerences are big. I was thinking cause this guy was some race car engine tech or whtever he had this thing miked down super close and had everything really tight.
Forgive the Chevy. As a Ford guy it pains me to say I switched from a rwd 5speed f250 to a Silverado 1500 4*4. But I got a deal ($1650 with new tires brakes, brake lines, I'm 3rd owner with full service history, 5.3 L 140k) . Can't haul as much as the f250 but I can use it more often being 4x4. I can also get all three kids and the wife in it, unlike my danger ranger . This is my second load of white oak. ETA I've got new rockers, corners, fender patches, and a helper spring set on the way.
That was a smoking deal. I have a ford Chevy and toyota SUVS I am not brand loyal. I like ford and Chevy equal.
I bought an F-250 diesel a month ago. There is a rebate on Mobil Delvac oil. I got 6 gallon jugs because that is all the store had. Then I was there another time and they had four 5 gallon buckets, so I got them all. After rebates the 5 gallon buckets work out to $1.25 or $1.50, I can't remember. That is crazy cheap for diesel oil. VR1 is not a true high zinc oil. It still meets API specs. For it to be a high zinc oil it would not. For a high zinc oil you need something like Joe Gibbs oil.

I picked up a zinc additive also. Thanks for the heads up. I'm glad to have looked into this history on oil.
Per gallon Edit: I just looked it was $24.99 for 5 gallons, $.62 a quart. I guess I was getting mixed up with the gallon price. Here is the rebate. I am not sure what all stores are participating. $60 Off Mobil Delvac™ 1300 Super | Mobil Delvac™ Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk
I have 4 gallons of Delvac in the basement for the Bronco as we speak. Back when I cared, I used to use Valvoline premium blue extreme synthetic. Now I use whatever is cheapest, but not garbage
I use Valvoline premium blue in the tractors, got a bunch on sale when it was 9.99 a gallon. I was not sure what I was going to run in this truck, then I saw this deal on the Delvac. The main thing is use a quality oil filter.
