why do you want something that big? (HP) all it is going to do is suck down lots of fuel. Have you eliminated the BADBOY? 5 grand gets you a brand new one, commercial hydros same 3100's the rest use, the rest is welded steel.

That's true...I was impressed when I switched from my Toro with a 17 HP single cyl Kohler engine to a Hustler with 20 HP twin cyl Kohler...fuel usage was not noticeably different...power (torque) is up very noticeably though!
That said...31 HP is gonna use some fuel!

I guess I am not looking for that much hp, but if I find what I consider the right mower and it has a big motor...

Says the man driving the big Cummins Diesel!!

It will only make 31HP if you need it. If the motor isn't under a lot of load, then it burns less fuel. Sure, there's a little more "overhead" associated with the additional displacement, but the difference isn't much.

I have the same motor on my mower and it probably burns about 1 - 1.25 gallons per hour mowing tall/thick grass in the spring...closer to one in the summer and fall. I can mow full speed year round...the extra power is nice when you need it.

I get away with running 3/4 throttle most of the time and still get a nice cut. At filt tilt...it sounds like I may achieve liftoff. I have high lift blades on it and they are a bit noisy. There is improvement in the quality of cut running full throttle, but I ain't really cutting for show.

I always thought you were supposed to run them full throttle for to keep the hydro pumps cool and oil pressure up in the engine. I run 3600 no-load RPM.

My mower is a bit different beast as far as the transmission...no Hydro 'pumps'...proprietary HST transmission with 4 gallon capacity. Have never read anything about them getting 'hot' in my readings about the ZD Botas. No tach on my machine, so I assume that there is not a 'set' RPM for mower?

I haven't the foggiest on most other mowers...possibly? I tend to run equipment only as hard as needed. Some of my friends crank it to the max whether they need it or not. I always figure if they allow you to regulate the throttle...you can do so with no fear of damage, otherwise the machine should come with a static throttle or a handy dandy warning label.

Just checked my manual. "Operate at full throttle for best results." They want the throttle at 1/2 for engagement of mower...so I figure anything in between is fair game?
