Mike I remember when you got that tractor, makes you wonder how you ever made due without it right?

For all you with an 'open station' tractor guy's that push your snow with it. I bought some electric motorcycle gear last year. Just a jacket & the controller to start with, iirc about $240. The guy there said to start with the jacket and that usually if you keep your core warm you'll be fine. I'm telling you he was right. They do have socks, gloves & pants but the 'core' deal and my carhart bibs keep the rest warm and cozy. Much cheaper than a cab door glass replacement
and not being a farmer, most of us are on & off the machine regularly so a cab can be sort of a hassle.

Thanks. I had my neighbor, who is a machinist by trade but also a good welder, make up the frame added to the top. It allows me to pull three pins and adjust it so I have a bigger opening. Usually it stays in the smaller opening position but is handy when I have bigger piles to put together and move to burn.

 

Maybe you should put them on CL free wood

 

Downhill is no issue . My grandpa had the front of a fwa 2950 (with just the bale spear on front) off the ground hauling a partial load of green hay/balege up a steap grade.

Id try to have that excavator over the axles. Maybe put the boom up front?

 

Well, the old Kohler kt17 engine on my ariens went South last night while mowing.

I'll have to check the hour meter to see how long it lasted. It was a series I. Then it was replaced under warranty in 84 with a new engine. It's been the same since then.

I'm looking at Honda gx630, Kohler command pro, and Briggs and Stratton vanguard repower kits. The Japanese made Briggs ( daihatsu makes the vanguard) and the Honda are my top choices. Both have repower kits so that the process is simple to swap engines.

 

The Kohler command 15 engine I have on the rider at my farm is a good strong engine. 15hp single cyl. Good on fuel too. It uses about half the fuel of the Briggs V twin I have in the troy bilt at the house. I think it's 18.5 hp?

They both have the same cut width and seem to work the same amount, meaning ground speed while cutting is similar, if anything I'd give the advantage to the Kohler powered mower.

I'm thinking the family got their money out of it, that's 34 years on that motor! He would of just been a boy when his family or the original owner, whoever that is , got it.

 

It's all good. 2k for the drop in Honda gx vtwin with all the engineering done from wiring harness to PTO shaft adapters to engine mount plate. They give unlimited assistance and will send any party you may need. The kits are made so that consumers can simply install in a couple hours. They say guys that have installed repower kits have gone from unboxing the crate to mowing the lawn in 3hrs.

My dad bought the tractor new in 84. It's a series 2 kt17. The original series 1 was replaced the first summer. So it's got a lot of sentimental value since he's gone, in addition to the fact that I put most of the hours on the tractor as I was 9 when he got it.

It's earned it's keep, and a repower.

I'll start a thread on the repower when I get to it.

A little over a year ago I helped my dad move some of his tractors out of his old shop that he sold about 5 years ago, new owner was asking if he was ever going to so he could use the space. Maybe someday one of them will be mine.

 

A couple more pictures and not all of his inventory. Always loved those old 2 cylinder JD's.

 

What happened to the Kohler ?

 

Not certain yet. It made nasty noises and was super low on power and was blowing smoke from the exhaust. It had a ton of hours on it. It still does turn over. But until it shut off, it was low on power when it went probably running on 1 cylinder. I've heard the connecting rods can go.

It's a series 2 kt17, so at least it had pressurized oiling, unlike the series 1 it had when brand new. I'm leaning towards the Honda gx630 vtwin to repower it.
