That sounds like a good idea. Saturday morning was the first time I've started it in some time, maybe June, & never checked the gas that was in it. My big bad. It started without a lot of effort, other than the compression wanting to pull my arm off. I know it needed some tuning, but not my strong suite, and even made the comment to the arborist I was helping that I needed to take it in for a tune-up. I should learn to pressure test, but right now buried at work so planned on new top end and take in for tuning. That sounds like a great offer and I may just take you up on it. Keep the ideas coming and I hope I can repay everyone.
I heard the pistons in these kits were not any good. Have you heard this? I have not heard of any failures but the Hyway piston I put in mine when I rebuild it was beefier than the cross.
No. Never heard of that. What probably happened was, on the downstroke, the rings hung on the exhaust floor and busted the top of the piston off. I've had Meteor, FT, and Cross in front of me at the same time and didn't notice anything alarming between them. Meteor was more shiny and may be more consistent in size, but I didn't mic them
Its certainly worth a shot but the plating on some of these am cylinders is a crap shoot. You will probably find by the time the transfer is gone the plating is hosed.
It was John Reilly that said that about the piston. The hyway piston I used had extra bracing cast into it that the cross didn't have. Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk
Don't know. Never heard of a failure I guess. Some of the finest builders I know grind 10 or 15 grams back out of the piston to lighten it back up.
Cross kit ordered and I will be taking huskihl up on his offer, THANK YOU & I will let you know when it arrives. What else do people recommend that I order to complete the rebuild? I am going to check in to vacuum testing. When I first stared the saw last weekend it was running & idling great. Only reason I was thinking tune-up was for wide-open-throttle. I am told the current cylinder does not have a base gasket, do you recommend I get one for the replacement? Thanks again all. Stephanie
Your old gasket will work if it's not beat up. Or you can assemble it using a sealant like motoseal. But you' have to check your squishband to piston crown clearance with thin electrical solder. Ideally, you want around .020 - .025". Others have done it and got .020. Mine was only .013", which isn' enough gap
To those of you that ship saws on a regular basis, what shipping company do you use? Best rate? Again, thanks Kevin.
Make sure the piston does not bind sliding down into the bore. I have two Cross kits here where the bottom of the cylinder is way to tight.
My chicom piston skirts kissed the crank just ever so slightly when I first checked it...enough to have caused problems for sure!
