I just did some digging I don’t have any 2*1/4 flat but I do have a huge sheet of steel that’s close I can cut them out of. No idea where I got it but I’ll do it tomorrow. I think all that’s left is tailgate, fenders and lighting then paint. The lighting will take a while to do but the rest is a few nights and done. Time to find some better ramp gate hinges I’m half tempted to go and buy some solid round stock and make sleeve pins. The hinges are resiculas $$$$ add a grease zerk to the sleeve and call it good.
Cool. For your gussets, 3/16 would work, but don't go thinner. I don't recall your winch rating, but it's gonna cantilever and create some issues if you're yanking heavy stuff (#1000 lbs. +) I think you're good to #1000 with this set-up, straight line pulls. The cantilever situation is my only concern, the rest looks good. For hinges, 3/4" sch. 40 pipe and 3/4" cold rolled round bar stock works well. Sloppy enough you don't need to grease them, but strong enough to do the job. 3/4" sch. 40- ID= .824- but you have a weld seam to deal with, it works out with some usage. Build it like a piano hinge, you'll never have an issue.
Nothing crazy puking the splitter up in, occasionally an atv or riding mower. I’ll weight and see if I can find 1/4 drops somewhere close to me... There is a tooling shop in town they might have some.
I need the gate to be able to slide off the trailer too otherwise I’d do the piano hinge. Hmm thinking cap time...
You can still use this type of hinge, just leave gaps instead of solid the whole way across. That way the gate/ramp can be slid sideways to disengage the pins. If you use 6" long pipe sections, then leave a 7" gap so that your 6.5" pins (for example) can have a cotter pin/clip to hold it in, and still be able to slide over and out
What guage expanded metal should I use for the ramp ? i stopped and looked at TSC and Farm and home they all have realllllly thin expanded steel... I think to thin.
Actually come to think of it it doesnt need to be crazy heavy I am putting supports where the tires from the mower and splitter will be.. Its mainly going to hold stuff from falling out the back anyways. we have never had a drop gate on this trailer before or any gate for that matter thats the icing on the cake for us!
My old trusty angle grinder. She isn’t pretty or powerful but it does the trick! I use scrap as a straight edge usually.
I have a Ryobi too.. How thick is the cutting wheel? I have used it for cutting firebrick too with masonry wheel.. Nice work Petey!
I don't know how I missed this thread, but I just read it all. Seeing that the trailer is 52" wide bed, how long is that trailer? It seems narrow. Also, the crazy weight ratings on the springs tell me it's longer than it looks. What are you planning on hauling?
It’s a solid axle 52” wide by 14’ long bed total length is just over 17’. I’ve had it scaled at 5000 lbs before with firewood, hauled bricks and had it maxed which now I know the springs that where on it where 7+k was probably close to 6000 lbs of bricks. It’s gonna be mostly firewood, splitter, lawn mower and home projects like lumber plywood and so on.. Probably the kayaks too but those are light and don’t count. Its in need of a lot of love and my plan is overkill but better to be overdone when I need it than to be not enough if I need it. I’m a bit OCD do it once type of thing I guess. It’s also getting cup holders somewhere. Just thought of that!
