Cutting for the farmer who bales my field. Gave me a big Wilton vice, a 281xp to go with the 298xp he "gave" me last year. He told me to keep the saws at the house "in case you need them" and hed let me know if he needed them. I also got a danger Ranger load of a cherry, shagbark, pignut, ash mix.
Generous guy! You’re a lucky man! Obviously you must do a lot for him though to have him think so highly of you. Good for you! Kindness and generosity have a way of coming back around.
I do a lot of tree work for him and am currently pushing his woods back from his house about 15yrds. I do a lot of climbing. We are supposed to split the wood 60-40 but I try to keep it 50-50.

I'm sure the vise is steel not cast iron, but I think the electrolysis method of removing rust from cast iron pans that I read yesterday by WeldrDave would work to remove the rust from that vise. link to thread.. Electrolysis tank for cast iron pans, "or anything you want to clean" Looks like you and your neighbor have a good relationship worked out that is mutually beneficial.

Nope, there cast, Sorry Chaz, didn't mean to step on you like that... "But" electrolysis will free them up. I would just soak the crap out of it with WD-40 or Break free, that'll get her free.
No issue, as I've stated many times "I've been wrong before." Just thought that since I'd read your thread on the cast iron that I'd put the thought out there. It would seem to me that Steel would be better for a vise, rather than cast, since I'm under the impression that cast is more brittle than steel. Does that vise not have an 'anvil flat' on it also? Just spitballin' here. Thx for the correct advice.
99% of all vises are cast iron. They are brittle when "struck" but can take much abuse. Anything with letters and usually rounded edges that's metal is a casting. Also, most dead give aways are the jaws are tapped and screwed into the face of the vise.
I am sure that somewhere deep down inside I knew I was wrong when I typed that, but tossed that uncertainty aside. As you say, you can visually tell cast from machined. Eh.. I think I'll get past this. Someday.
I agree with WeldrDave , that’s definitely a cast vice, and a darned good one. Another thing that works well on something like that is Fluid Film. Great find!
I've got PB blaster on the nuts mounting it to the steel . Once those are broke free I'm going to soak it in diesel, ATF, Brake fluid for a week or two. Then wire wheel it and see where we are at
