Exactly what happens to me. I don't smoke so when I do need it, it is out of fluid. A very safe lighter to carry in a welding shop, but it requires maintenance and I quit carrying it. Carry a Bic lighter in my work coats around the farm.

I am likely to use the torch when my lighter runs out. I also use my torch for lighting my beehive smoker.

    How?
I was wondering if there is a way to fill these with a 20 lb tank

There is a fitting that you screw into a 20 pounder then screw the small tank on it's sketchy at best. The small green tanks don't seal back up sometimes.

I used a few for the novelty.
Its a nice thing to have but if anything it all requires just a little tlc and watching over it. Id fill it up every 3-5 days.

No no no, the fittings are made by big companies like Mr heater. They work very well. Easily refill the 1# green cans from 20# bulk containers.

I don't think the issue is refilling. In my experience the green tanks dont always reseal. Perhaps I was doing something wrong.

I'll have to investigate refilling the little tanks. I don't have a 20lb tank, my grill is plumbed into my 500 gallon tank, and there is a quick connect right behind the grill. Could make it super easy if the tanks will reseal!

You must be doing it wrong. Don't mess with the little Schrader looking valve. All you do is thread the little tank to the bulk tank using the same threads/valve that you use every time you attach the green bottle to anything. The normal threads are meant to be used repeatedly and the inner valve is as well.

You freeze the empty green tank and weigh in 16 oz of lpg from an inverted bulk tank. It goes into the green tank where propane normally goes out.

Then, since you leave the torch head installed, this valve on the green tank stays open. Just don't underestimate the energy contained in 1# of lpg.

Looks pretty simple to refill the little tanks , a 10 dollar adapter , then you have to turn donor tank , like a 20lb, upside down to get the liquid propane into the small tank

That’s the torch I use for soldering at work, it’s great unless you need a bigger flame.
For the woodstove in the shop, we have a green coleman canister with a regular torch and a flint striker. It’s the only thing that won’t get stolen! If there was a Burnsosmatic with a piezo ignition, it would disappear in a week.
This reminds me of boyscouts when I got ahold of a Coleman canister, and spent a half an hour trying to jam a twig into the safety valve. When I finally got it, propane shot at my face. Boy was the scoutmaster mad!

That will work just fine , only thing is those tall tanks are not as stable standing up as the fat little green ones .
I had my tall tank setting in a coffee can so it wouldn't get knocked over

Ya just the ignition head was the same cost as with a bottle. Figured I could get a fat bottle later when this one is used up. As long as the threads are the same.

I bought the bigger MAPP gas torch that came with a yellow bottle of map gas. Works great for starting fires. When that MAPP gas ran out I just grabbed the closest little green LPG can and threaded it right on. Works great.

I like how it says "self lighting" as though the torch will randomly light itself. You need to actually light it by pressing the trigger.
