I should be able to use a small drill or an awl to poke around for the bottom rafter cord. Yep, I'm not touching anything until I know the exact door we're getting. Nice surprise today on the laundry room header height........2X8 @ 82", so that one should be good for a regular exterior door. See if you can spot the problem though.............
No jack studs, that will cost you 3"s. Actually you can use 3/4" plywood for jacks in place of 2x4. Dang giving away all the framing secrets. how do you layout hip rafters for an octagon? Google to your hearts content, the answer is not on the internet.
Yep, but it's not an issue as I have plenty of room to the left of the window. There are jacks under the window, however. Didn't even notice the webs........ Those are a problem too.
You and I know that, but evidently the person(s) who built it didn't. Probably 60% of the house is on concrete. Unfortunately, I can't rebuild the whole house....as much as I'd love to. There's a perfect spot on slightly higher ground about 40' back at the front of the garden that would be perfect.
huh.. when I was 8 so 1980 ish.. I helped my dad redo a porch.. we tarred the stringer because of ground contact maybe he just didn't know of it then.. when 15 and built camp we used it then on slab.. back then you went to lumber store we did not have home depots.. often went to the mill.. I remember it was my job to tar 2 by 10.. on saw horses.. he made a big deal of doing ends etc etc
Switched gears a little today. Started tearing off the aluminum siding on the back of the house. Almost got the back done, except the gable and starter course (gas pipe in the way). The wall is a "fiber board". I've seen this stuff before, but not as structure. Guy finally called and said he'd be here either late this afternoon or Monday to estimate the work we need/want done. Pretty stoked about that. It's been 2 weeks since we first talked to him. Anybody know the going rate for scrap aluminum?
couple weeks ago brought 6000 lbs steel and 900 aluminum got less than 250 after bringing to weigh station half hour each way... not worth time to load unload much less gas
run a PT band around the bottom of the house where the first row of siding is now. 1) it will keep the siding up out of the dirt 2) it will keep new siding from being broken / hit by weedwacker and other landscaping tools 3) you will be able to mount the gas line securely 4) and being you are adding a slider I assuming you can secure the new deck to it. I am assuming you are going vinyl
Hoping the guy will show on Monday. Pulled west side aluminum today...........have a few pieces to pull still. ironpony , the ground will be regraded to drop a few inches. Found something interesting on the west and south walls. There's a 1X at the base. Untreated. Not sure about a deck on this end of the house, but there will probably be one step down, possibly two from the slider. Well, siding is PVC that looks sorta like cedar shakes. Made by Grayne. Wow, that pic got kinda large, but that's the color wife likes. Aged grey, but it looks like there's a very slight blue to it.
Pretty easy stuff, but I'm gettin' tired. Not 40 anymore. I've got a few questions for the guy when he gets here. Wife went through the whole house and pulled all the interior window trim too. When I know they're on their way to do the windows, I'll pull all the storms off. Another easy job.
