So today it was supposed to rain all day however a cold front pushed through and it's breezy with no humidity.
I planned on putting together a few more pallets and then splitting wood .
    Surprise!
Two doors down the house just sold and the tree service was cutting most of the oak trees down.
When they had the truck loaded with chips I went over and asked if I wanted to dump the chips two doors down of course they did when they asked me did I want the wood to so I took it
They might have another truck load of logs and also one of chips so we'll see. I'll make a few more pallets because I got a lot of splitting to do.

Got the last of the wood and chips.
Made up 6 more pallets for wood.
In last pic what a waste with round cut so skinny. Hate splitting them like that!

How much is that worth in Long Island? I would selling and working for myself there, assuming I had a steady supply of logs.

Woodsnwoods down here there are so many people selling oak cheap and I don't think you can compete with them. Of course they all say it seasoned oak and when you get it it's freshly split.
There are a lot of tree service companies that sell wood. If they don't sell the wood they have to pay landfills to take it as well as pay to get rid of their chips. That's why you see wood along the curb and a lot of tree companies are happy to dump it at your house if you can take it .
I've been lucky enough to hook up with three different tree companies. I actually told one not to dump anymore because they consistently cut the logs around 10 inches and I hate splitting short stuff like that. I understand why they did it because they were little guys and had to lift logs into the back of the truck .I found it was more work to split or get rid of the logs so I stoped getting wood from them.
The best company cuts the wood 18 to 20 inches and loads their truck with the bobcat so it doesn't matter how big the logs are.
I enjoy splitting wood stacking it and burning it. If I started selling it that would probably change and it would become work and I would have to deal with the public. I give away plenty of wood and that's fine with me

I just assembled 6 more pallets this weekend and filled 3 of them with wood I had split but lying around. That gives me 36 assembled and 33 of them full! I am really liking this pallet rack system. This is my second year doing it.

Deer Meadow Farm i've seen pictures your tractor and pallets before this and I love them
it looks like you're doing something very similar to me.
Are you buying wood to make the uprights on the sides of the palettes. I started taking pallets apart and using that wood to build the sides. I only use oak pallets to do this I find the softwood isn't strong enough to hold the sides upright .
What I love best about this is being able to stack and move the wood around and manage things so easily .

I get the pallets for free and buy rough-cut pine for the uprights. I cut my wood at 24" so I get two rows of wood. The uprights are centered on the pallet at 4' apart so each one roughly hits the center of the two rows of wood. I use a 4' 2x4 cross to tie the two uprights on each side together, then I use some (free) aircraft cable to tie the uprights together. I get approximately 56 cubic feet per pallet which is about all I can lift with my tractor. I'm looking to get some forks for my backhoe so I can feel a little safer when I stack them, especially when they are still kind of green.

Deer Meadow Farm it's remarkable how similar we are doing these pallets. I use vinyl coated chain-link stretched out across the top of mine. My sides are half-inch or three-quarter inch oak removed from pallets. I cut my wood at around 20 inches so I get 2 rows on the pallets also. I have almost all red Oak so I can barely lift my pallet a foot off the ground when it's a full 4 foot high pallet. When I want to put a pallet on top I built the sides 3' high.

The real big difference from what I can tell between us is that I split and stack directly on the pallet. In the past I would have a 6 foot pile of splits and I found it backbreaking to keep bending and stacking on a pallet. Now I skip that step and stack directly on the pallet .

I stack directly onto the pallets when I can, but often it's much faster for me to process all at once and stack later.

Yes. Do which ever works best for you. If you can save some handling, that is good but not always possible.
