This is my engine off my generator. Its a 10HP briggs. About 15 years old. If you need the model number i can post that. But my rope is worn and i shortened it before it broke. But i was going to put a new rope on it so it doent bust as i try to start it in a power outage. How do i take it off? Looks like its rivited? Do i have to drill those out to get it off?
I did mine like this guy. It's a really bad video but the info is good. Worked on my splitter. I didn't cut the metal like he did. Just bent it enough to get the knot through then straightened it back out.
So can I not do like the video and cit part of the recoil cover off and feed it through? I haven even went out to look since it got dark.
I did not watch the video. Remove the blower housing. Briggs and Stratton Intek OHV Blower Housing With Recoil Starter 699598 591301 | eBay Then wind the spring up as tight as you can, then back it off a turn. Jam a screw driver in the recoil to keep it from unwinding. Insert rope through the hole from the outside of the blower housing into the recoil and tie a good knot. Remove screwdriver Reinstall blower housing.
I usually drilled and re-riveted these when I ran into them, but the method in the video looks promising.
That video worked like a charm. My rope was a tad thicker, even though I think it was the same size he said, it's what I had and I was going to use it anyway. I keep 3 sizes on hand. 3mm, 3.5mm, and 4.5mm. I just had to work it though the recoil and the handle a little. Did it in like 10 mins. Wy better than pulling all that mess off. IT worked for me!!
