I am thinking along the lines of Horkn and tapped flywheel or welded with a homemade puller.

I have pulled chainsaw flywheels, I just can't hold the quad with one hand!!

damm I wish some other small engine hacks were close by, just talking it out here is a help.

I think you could just hold a little pressure against it, it may come while tapping.

Will recruit my neighbor, hopefully PB Blaster and an extra set of hands prevents surgery.

If it's on a tapered shaft, you just need to hold it firm while tapping the shaft to get it broke free. ALL engines have some side play in the crank, I've driven a wooden wedge behind the flywheel and smacked the nose of the crank to break it loose. Use a nut to protect the threads, block of wood, brass/lead hammer, whatever you gotta do. The crank needs to move less than .001" in relation to the flywheel to get it loose.

That looks like the starter gear that's on the opposite side of the motor behind the clutch assembly. It probably has some loctite on it and a little bit of heat can go a long way.

Yup, been calling it flywheel knowing it wasn't. It is the starter gear, good call.

I never had to take one of them off the lt80s we have had. Try heat along with pressure straight across the gear and a light tapping on the shaft. Sorry I'm not much more help.

I had the same symptoms that you are having on an artic cat kitty cat snowmobile. My nephews had rode it for hours one evening then the next day it wouldn't start. I tried everything cleaning the carb, checking timing, put fuel down the sparkplug hole, checked the reeds, made sure it wasn't flooded. I had great spark and compression I was stumped so decided to pull the engine apart. I found the crank seals had completely disintegrated. Replaced with new ones run like a top to this day.

cwn877 that is basically the next step after being sure of timing & stator.

Sadly, the flywheel isn't even on this side, shows how little I know about this thing. :hair:. However, I am fairly certain I will need to get to the crank seals so all is not lost.

Timing is off by 120 degrees. Someone has been in here before as it is missing one of the 3 screws that holds the stator in place. Not sure if 120 out will make it not fire at all, but makes sense to my simple brain.

Hoping to pressure test it tonight if I can rig up something through the plug hole. I figure I am already staring at the seals, might as well test them while I'm here.

What broke to allow the timing to be off that far?

Oh, I thought you were saying someone bolted the stator in 120* out...the more I think about that it probably isn't even possible.
So the flywheel key was OK?

That's a possibility. I've learned that with some people anything is possible.

Someone dumber than me indeed installed it that far out. Key on this side is intact. Shaft is one rusty dude.

So you are saying the stator really was mounted 120* off?! I didn't think that could be done due to how the wiring goes through the case...not to mention I wouldn't think the screw holes would line up...but sounds like maybe that's why there was one left out! :headbang:
