Same thing if you were to lay them flat. Alternate the rings and it will stop the tabletop from cupping.
Lots done today! Cut one apron's housing dados. Cut wedges and stays, first test fit followed by gluing the back benchtop to the apron. I must say, the end is in sight!!!
Using the. Ench to build itself! Bummed that this top had a. It of twist so I am planing it back to flat and the. i will start cutting the vise dados and finally the apron.
Looks good. I know know you are following this guy Peter Sellers plan, but ive never seen that wedge detail before or the apron being dadoed like that on anything ( been doing woodworking a long time both pro and hobby) Just curious, how wide is your bench?
Nevermind I counted 2x4s. 36" is imho a touch too wide. But when you build your next bench (and you will, everyone does) you'll know what you want. I see that apron dado being a problem Im not putting you or your work down by anymeans
About 36" wide and 6 feet long. The wedges worked great to stop racking and only two installed and let the bench be disassembled if needed.
Oh I think some aspects are over-engineered in the design but it is a student bench teaching a lot of technique, and it is working, learning. Ton!
What kind of problem might it create? I sized the bench for the room and wanted a double since most of my projects are small I can have one going on each side. Not feeling put down I love learning from people with experience!
Sorry. I didnt realize that the dado was bigger than the leg with the wedge in there. I thought it was glued. I never built a takedown bench before. I always built them to never come apart. Quick ? How is the top attached? Just by the apron and wedge? If so you are going to adjust that wedge when it expands and contracts.
Sorry for all the questions. Is this in your basement or in a garage? How long did you let the wood acclimate?
The more i look at it, its a pretty ingenious design. I was just concerned about the top moving and splitting . But with the 2x6 on edge it shouldnt be a problem. Wood gets wider not longer(lol no homo)
I'll pound in the wedges until they don't move anymore. The apron gets a carriage bolt through it once that's done. The bench top will be lagged to the bearer up from the bottom.
In my basement which is very dry and the humidity is consistent. I didn't let it acclimate long enough (about a week) hence the twist in the top. I can fix it with some planing though. Garry
Yeah I hope it holds out. I liked the design and I know it'll function for what I'm doing right now. Hopefully it won't split, but if it has issues I'll upgrade/fix in the future. Garry
